A Simplified Approach to IT Architecture with BPMN: A Coherent Methodology for Modeling Every Level of the Enterprise distills the insights a seasoned IT professional gathered over the course of thirty-five years spent studying, designing, deploying, critiquing, and refining IT architectures. This approach, rooted in models, follows a logical process for creating architectures that can unify IT across every level of the enterprise.
David Enstrom, a published author with education and extensive experience in the field, places the Business Process Model and Notation—the title’s BPMN—at the heart of the Unified Architecture Method—UAM—that undergirds this work’s method. The highly structured contents of A Simplified Approach to IT Architecture with BPMN cover an array of topics: the demystification of IT architecture; the description of UAM; how to architect-in IT security; the delineation of Business, Logical, and Technical Perspectives; and the depiction of architectural patterns.
The additions of a bibliography, a glossary, several supplementary sections, and an index supplement the main presentation in A Simplified Approach to IT Architecture with BPMN, rendering it a comprehensive source for IT professionals charged with responsibilities for IT architecture at every level of the enterprise.

From the Author
The Unified Architecture Method, and the associated book, clarifies what IT architecture is, where it fits within the enterprise, how to produce valid IT architectures, and how to apply the resulting models to advance the goals of the enterprise.
There is a lot of information about the UAM on the web site (unified-am.com), but basically the UAM framework is different (the set of models) from other approaches; and using this framework it separates concerns for the target audiences in two ways:
The other important difference is that a methodical and logical approach (process) is used to define IT architectures. It is not hap-hazard or even arbitrary like many methodologies out there! And the architectures are complete ... all interrogatives are addressed.
Finally, this methodology can be applied anywhere within the organization, from EA down to specific systems, and if carefully done all of these architectures are clearly related.
So the book and methodology are of use to everyone involved in the design and implantation of IT.

Great Contribution to the Industry
By T Anderson
I almost gave this book a 3 star review for two reasons-
1. The title should be "A Simplified Approach to It Architecture: A Coherent Methodology for Modeling Every Level of the Enterprise" not "A Simplified Approach to It Architecture with BPMN: A Coherent Methodology for Modeling Every Level of the Enterprise". This book uses BPMN with the author's extensions a lot. It also uses SPEM and UML. Using BPMN highlighted in the title, like it does, puts the book into a context that I think will have some people buying it for the BPMN and they will be disappointed. I was because that is why I bought it. I just happened to like what it actually is better than what I thought I was buying.
2. This book is about promoting a methodology - Unified Architecture Method (UAM) - that you have to pay another $45 to get to use. A published version of the default methodology, along with a few examples of tailored versions are available online, but that is like a programming book that only makes the example application available for viewing online, but then wants you to pay $45 for the code.
I didn't ding it the 2 stars, because like I said above, I actually like what I got better than what I thought I was going to get. I have years of experience doing software process engineering which gives me a great appreciation for the author's accomplishments.
My experience also is the reason for the second ding I have listed above. There are many people who will benefit from this book that will not have the same perspective. I've spent years using Rational's tools (now IBM's tools) as well as the Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) building and customizing software development processes. I therefore see the method library like code I am being denied that I would love to play with. Most people won't see it that way.
I applaud the author for accomplishing all that he has. He has taken software development methodologies industry best practices, customized them with his own material- some of which I find refreshingly unique, made them available in a customizable repository, and written this great book on how to use it.
Why am I qualified to do so? I had the privilege of creating a similar repository for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was called Pennsylvania’s Business Solutions Center of Excellence (BSCoE) Software Engineering Process (SEP) Repository. At the time we had to choose between licensing the RUP or using EPF to build our own. It was the same amount of work to remove material from the RUP to create smaller ceremony processes as it was to create our own, with the right material, so we went the free route instead of $500,000++ route it would have cost for all the seats we needed from IBM.
I contacted Microsoft, Scott Amber, CMU's SEI, SPARX, Nick Rozanski and Eoin Woods, and the Eclipse Foundation for written permission to use their material. I spent the next year building a customizable SDLC repository with 3 starter templates for different levels of ceremony.
Here is a short list of what it included -
OpenUP- Open Unified Process, DSDM- Dynamic Systems Development Method, XP- Extreme Programming, SCRUM, Agile EA - Agile Enterprise Architecture, Architectural Synthesis, Builders Guide, Restrictive Development, Viewpoints and Perspectives, Software Architecture Description (V&P), Enterprise Unified Process (EUP), Full-Lifecycle Object-Oriented Testing (FLOOT), Microsoft Frameworks and Tools, SPARX EA Tool Guidance, Architecture Business Cycle, QAW: Elicit Quality Attribute Scenarios Using the Quality Attribute Workshop, ADD: Design the Software Architecture Using the Attribute-Driven Design Method, ATAM: Evaluate the Software Architecture Using the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method, CBAM: Evaluate the ROI of Architectural Approaches Using the Cost Benefit Analysis Method, and ARID: Evaluate Architectural Service Using Active Reviews for Intermediate Designs.
This book covers the Unified Architecture Method - UAM. A process framework for defining IT Architectures. Not Enterprise or Software, but IT Architecture. The book has a valid and clearly defined viewpoint of architecture. It covers it in great detail showing the reader how to make use of it. You can view the process online to see what it includes. Google it, Amazon doesn't allow links. Personally I think it is a great contribution to the industry.
This book is nicely organized and easy to read. It does a great job of presenting the material. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about IT Architecture and SDLC tailoring
