ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

I completely fell in love with this book! It's literally the book I conserve best out of all the books I own!
Honestly, the characters, the descriptions, the PLOT!
I just can't handle so much perfection, really. I can't find the words just... just read it and if you do give me a call so that we can fangirl together becausre, honestly, this is awesome. I'm forcing my friends to read it because this world won't be okay until every single person has read it.
Oh, by the way, they all loved it too.
So, Dear Quinn (you should change your name to queen, just saying) you made my life a good one. If I die the 21st of december at least I would have died happy.
But if YOU! YES YOU WHO IS READING THIS RATING! If YOU haven't read it... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Excellent in every way

This book is hilarious, witty, suspenseful, and steamy. The author has a wonderful vocabulary, and her writing is equally stunning. I felt the setting she conjures up--a rich, rolling countryside with gorgeous old buildings and fountains--was perfect for her plot line. Nikolas "Nik" is a ordinary teenager who just wants to get through college and get out. When he's forced to go to the snobby Academy of Holy Names, he hates everything about it right from the start. When he encounters Seth, the "king" of the Academy, and becomes the target of a bet between him and his two best friends, things really start to heat up. Seth is sin incarnate. You grow to hate him so much, even as you're thinking, 'Man, he's gorgeous'. He's one of those dangerous characters, the kind you know you should stay away from, but they already have you enthralled. The book has incredible tension, and honestly I traded a shift at work so I could finish reading it in one sitting. It's wonderfully suspenseful, and the author throws in a curve ball towards the end that literally made me gasp. If you want a well-written, fun, sexy story, this book is all of that and more. I highly recommend it and will reread it God only knows how many times.

I love this book sooooooooooo much! For those of you that don't know, this started off as a fanfiction for the popular MalexMale pairing SasuNaru (SasukexNaruto) from the popular Japanese manga, Naruto. I loved it when it was a FF, and I love it as a book. Briliant work, Quinn! :D Please, read! It's hot and steamy with a great story line!

3. The text is designed for someone who has no Medical Knowledge.

I would have liked:
1. The important terms could have been highlighted for easy reference.

I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely:

I have used all his creativity stuff ever since I started my own strategy consulting (& book store) business in late 1991.

From my personal & professional experience, I would like to say that the entire collection of Roger von Oech's creative work has been designed to serve three strategic purposes:

- understanding - & removing - your mental blocks;
- breaking your habitual patterns;
- shifting your focus & changing your paradigms;

As a matter of fact, once you appreciate & commit to these three strategic purposes in your life, you will soon realise that there is nothing in this world to stop you from getting rid of old ideas & getting new & fresh ideas.

I think everyone should have a pack of this cards because everyone sometimes feels stuck with a problem to the point that he is unaware of other possible solutions. The ideas in this pack help to look at the perplexing issue from many different perspectives. Sooner or later one may see the light, an open door, most likely many, many doors leading to numerous possible solutions. These cards are a valuable tool for brainstorming ideas, prompting the person to think of ideas that might have never crossed his mind otherwise. The wonderful think about coming out with creative ideas is that you also have lots of laughs while you're doing it because you begin to think of wild, whacky and outrageously fun things.

very good supplement to other books on Bordeaux

This is a very enjoyable book to leaf through, filled with a variety of photographs along with many interesting sidebars and lists of wines to sample; however, because the focus is on Clarke's love affair with the Bordeaux region and its wines, and because much of the text assumes knowledge of complex subject matter that many readers will not have, it's not necessarily a good primer for those who are just beginning to make their way through the maze of Bordeaux wines. Look to Stephen Brook's "The Complete Bordeaux" for that.

A couple of other caveats: Clarke could have used a better editor as many sentences ramble on to the point of incomprehension. And while the book is filled with gorgeous photographs, I would like to have seen fewer photos in which the author appears. Do we really need to see Oz Clarke getting a facial in a Bordeaux spa?

Despite these quibbles, "Oz Clarke's Bordeaux" is a fascinatingly eclectic book that any Bordeaux enthusiast would do well to have on their shelf. I bought a copy through an Amazon reseller for a few dollars - a steal at that price.

Excellent at doing what it aims to do

Is this a complete treatise on Bordeaux? No! If you want that, Stephen Brook fills the role really well. If you want a multitude of tasting notes, Broadbent and (sigh) Parker offer that. But if what you're aiming for is an eminently digestible, easy read that entertains as well as informs, you've found it.

This was one of the first books on Bordeaux I read and coming back to it after a while, I'm really struck by how upbeat Clarke is. There's no terrible complaint and dissatisfaction, just a "different strokes for different folks" attitude written by a guy who's clearly in love with the region. I get the sense that he enjoys tasting these wines more than he enjoys giving them a score, which I think is something that can't so frequently be said anymore.

In short, an excellent, brief overview of the region and its chateaux as well as some useful travel tips.

I purchased this a a gift to accompany a bottle of wine (purchased in Bordeaux) that we gave as a Christmas gift. The book included the Château the wine came from. I reading through the book I found it easy to locate items as you would any reference book along with parts organized as a non reference book. It is not very thick and not overwhelming for someone just learning about Bordeaux wine or someone more experienced that wants a quick compact reference on just Bordeaux wine.

Granting that some things we call emotions, e.g., moods, are subjective, de Sousa contends that emotions typically intend aspects of the objective world and can be rationally appraised. He alleges that we standardly learn the vocabulary of emotion by associating emotion-names with paradigm scenarios of early life that subsequent cultural experience reinforces. Thereafter, emotional objectivity arises in terms of the similarities between an emotion's new target-situation and its paradigm scenario. Some excellent ideas but heavy going.

An interesting book. It is also a unique book in that the author tackles a topic not many have dwelled upon in 20th century thought. He presents emotion as a kind of perception that guides or organizes reason, but I would like to have seen more on this since he touches upon it briefly. The rest of the book is an excursion into epistemology and the author's own thoughts and evaluations. The book would have benefited from more examples as well. Come with a rich vocabulary (e.g., homunculi) and be prepared to tolerate rereading and dense language in attempting to follow arguments. I am not quite sure about the intended audience, but it would seem to be editors of philosophy or psychology journals, or the staff of philosophy departments. The average reader would need 2 to 3 times the number of pages to understand what is being talked about. This is a pity because the topic is important. Interestingly he uses 'she' for general reference. Overall, although it seems to be more of a skeptical justification that is bogged down in the analytic, cognitive approach, it is worth reading for the excellent ideas but does require forbearance.

Philosophy is still the mother of science

I bought this book when I casually bumped into it in a bookshop. I was immediately captured by its intriguing title. The western culture we live in considers the rationality of emotion as absolute nonsense. (Some years later, I would read Antonio Damasio's "Descartes' Error" who takes this argument a step further, and convincingly shows that our emotional brain ultimately produces rationality !)

To prove his point, Ronald de Sousa focuses on the way our emotions evolve during our lifetime. He starts his investigation with the way philosophy has treated emotions so far, trying to classify them, but without being able to come up with the definitive list. He then formulates the following hypothesis : "... yet it cannot be denied that there are, in other animals as in human babies, modes of behavior that we take to express something like human emotions. I think we can understand, in principle, how our repertoire of emotions gets built up, without positing a set of "primary emotions" that get combined like basic blocks or even mixed like primary colors. We do need a repertoire of primitive instinctual responses, but emotions are not mere responses. My hypothesis is this : We are made familiar with the vocabulary of emotion by association with paradigm scenarios. These are drawn first from our daily life as small children and later reinforced by the stories, art, and culture to which we are exposed. Later still, in literate cultures, they are supplemented and refined by literature. Paradigm scenarios involve two aspects : first, a situation type providing the characteristic objects of the specific emotion-type, and second, a set of characteristic or "normal" responses to the situation, where normality is first a biological matter and then very quickly becomes a cultural one."

What makes us human is the development of our emotions, not the capacity to do mental arithmetic or read a map. Our neocortex is an extension of our limbic system, our emotional brain. That explains also why all our actions are motivated by our emotions. Morality goes hand in hand with underlying emotions.

Now, the beauty of philosophy lies in the fact that de Sousa has been proven right by scientific investigation *afterwards*, confirming once again that philosophy is the mother of science. Helen Fisher would show in her book "Why we love", published in 2004, that when brain scans are performed on people that recently fell in love, compared to people who have a stable relationship for some years, there is a clear displacement of brain activity from the limbic system to the neocortex, from "being in love" as a primary emotion to "love" as a moral emotion.

what emotions are for

I read this book a few years ago and found it interesting. Since then I have learned more about the philosophical ground of the scientific method guiding the author's approach. Reading it again now, with a deeper understanding, is a greater pleasure.

Paul Thagard and Mario Bunge demonstrate the relation between science and philosophy, as well as between philosophy and reality. When one understands what these relationships are, then one can appreciate the effectiveness of de Sousa's approach to rationality in this book.

It is almost thoroughly scientific in its methods. There is some reference to Freud, but it's not essential to the argument. And the author displays compassion along with a robust sense of humor.

My favorite section of the book, which starts on page 190, is: "What Are Emotions For? A New Biological Hypothesis."

When I began to seriously consider what emotions are for and what their origins are in biology, I began to understand my experiencing of emotions as they occurred to me. So, I began to feel less helpless in the process.

More understanding is always better for a human. Misunderstanding what emotions are for can lead to serious problems.

Anyone seriously concerned with rationality will find this book very helpful.

De Sousa's subsequent work adds to the benefits.
