About the Author

Jill Rutherford is the Academic Director and founder of Ibicus International, one of the IBAEM regions leading training organizations. She has extensive experience teaching and consulting on IB Environmental Systems and Societies.

Gillian Williams is Education Durector at Utahloy International School in Zengcheng, China. She has experience of teaching and examining IB ESS, TOK and Geogrpahy, and has been invoved in curriculum review for both ESS and TOK. Prior to her move to China, Gillian taught in Jordan, Tanzania,and Malaysia.

Typos, not enough review questions.

Good content, too many typos. Seems like it was sent to publisher too quickly without enough editing. Glad it follows the course curriculum, and has good examples and case studies. I wish there were more review questions per chapter. My students would love some study questions.

This work is a first-rate, clearly written account of a bizarre 20th century political experiment. Alexander du Toit, Times Higher Education As a lecturer on modern South African history, I will find this book extremely valuable. It provides a strong, textured historical narrative and simultaneously engages critically in key conceptual debates. It is impressively up-to-date and draws on an immensely wide range of literature, much of which is helpfully laid out in a bibliographical annexure ... the book stands in any context as an important work of synthesis with a coherent, and sometimes controversial, set of arguments. Clive Glaser, South African Historical Journal Dubow's history emphasizes ideas and contexts, from global realities like the Cold War to philosophical, theological, and theoretical debates. About the Author

Saul Dubow is a Professor of African History at Queen Mary, University of London. Dubow previously taught at the University of Sussex. Born and brought up in Cape Town, he has degrees from the universities of Cape Town and Oxford. He has published widely on the development of racial segregation and apartheid in all its aspects: political, ideological, and intellectual. He has special interests in the history of race, ethnicity, and national identity, as well as imperialism, colonial science, and global circuits of knowledge. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Southern African Studies.

Great Text for a College Class on Modern South African History

This book is an excellent survey of white domination and black resistance in Apartheid South Africa (1948-94). The book does a great job of balancing nuanced detail with "big picture" analysis (including international politics). Thankfully, the author avoids the trap of "ANC Triumphalism" -- the assumption that the ANC had a near-monopoly on liberation politics and was destined to lead South Africa to freedom -- by including long sections on the PAC, Black Consciousness. labor unions, white activists, liberation theology, and the UDF. The writing is crystal-clear; the overall tone is balanced and non-polemical. Bottom line: "Apartheid" is part of a growing scholarly trend to treat Apartheid as history rather than morality play. The book is a pleasure to read and definitely one to keep. I took off one star only because the book assumes a fair amount of knowledge of South African history, culture and geography. Readers coming to the subject for the very first time might be lost.

So you're going to the Southern Cone? Or perhaps only thinking about it? Well, think about it some more, and place these images of Argentina in your mind: the Western hemisphere's highest peaks, rising to almost 7000m and blanketed in virgin snow; the painted deserts of the northern Andes, high and dry with colonial cities and lanky cacti; legendary Iguazu Falls, a massive rush of water falling nearly 20 stories and extending as far as the eye can see; shimmering blue-green lakes stretching out between lush mountain forests in the Lake District; astounding southern glaciers actively calving huge slivers of ice; and the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, instilling a romantic tingle and wanderlust. Then there's Tierra del Fuego, the tip of the southern world, encompassing beautiful scenery and the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia. Or how about a cruise to (relatively) nearby Antarctica?

Everywhere in Argentina, from the northern subtropical lowlands to the Patagonian shores, you will glimpse wildlife ranging from strange guanacos, rheas and capybaras to the more familiar flamingoes, whales and penguins.

Fills more of the void than the others

I used the guide in February 2003 to complete a trip in Argentina. The Lonely Planet guide was the best that I found, but none were up to par. I had Rough Guide to Argentina with me as well, and found it superior for the descriptions of points of interest. Lonely Planet, however, provided adequate descriptions and added travel information (75% correct) and local maps from time to time. Particularly unreliable were prices (of course, with the economic situation) and flight information. Pricing in any of the Arg. guides published for early 2003 is only good for comparison between like opportunities. Flights tended to be offered on different days or had been cancelled since publishing. The only notable information flaw I remember was in the El Bolson description, where they placed the cervezeria and associated campground on the opposite side of town. Everyone I met travelling to Uruguay or Paraguay had the Shoestring Guide to S.A. rather than this specialty guide, so I have no information on those sections of the book. All in all, the L.P. guide provided the best overall information, and I wouldn't have had as much time to enjoy my trip without it.

A step up, rather

The first 'reviewer' has it wrong--this edition of Lonely Planet's Argentina book is a remarkable improvement over the 3rd edition, which at times is convolutedly wordy beyond belief. The review sounds like it was written by the previous author. Be aware that some competetive guidebooks, such as those put out by Avalon (or Moon) pay their authors based on the royalty system. In other words, on how many books they sell. Avalon may be putting out their own Argentina guide soon. Your best advice: run through the books at a bookstore and decide for yourself which fits your needs best.

It looks as if only one, perhaps two, of the five authors was really up to the job.

It offers what may be the first-ever complete concordance of the text, an index of sorts to every appearance of every character-or "core word"-used in the entire document. This will prove useful to serious students of Chinese spirituality, and to those who want to not only read the I Ching but to use it as a textbook for the practice of divination. To this end, the editors include advice on "interrogating the oracle," or using the text to obtain answers to specific questions or guidance on a decision. An in depth guide to the I Ching

The great thing about this version of the I Ching is that problems of translation are overcome by the offering of a variety of possible meanings. This gives a closer representation of what the original Chinese reader would have percieved, and provides profound richness far exceeding a standard translation.

Whilst other books I have seen simplify the I Ching, this one retains all the original depth of meaning. It takes a little time to adjust to interpreting it, but is well worth the effort, the result offering a far broader picture than is available in the simplified versions.

There are several layers of meaning in each hexagram, including many references to the 'dao' or spiritual path, and the 'small' which can be interpreted as trivial material things, but can also be interpreted as maintaining spiritual presence and harmony - for me it is the spiritual aspect that carries the essential value of the I Ching. The reader can choose whether to interpret his or her own readings in a spiritual sense according to what feels personally appropriate.

The 'counter hexagram' explanations can be a great guide to the main area of focus.

The only slight criticism is that I would have found it helpful to have a selection of example interpretations in the introduction. That said, this is the only version of the I Ching that I have felt motivated to buy, others I looked at but did not feel any inclination to get them for myself. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to understand the I Ching.

Chinese Whispers? NOT!

The notion of this being the `original' I Ching, carefully translated by obvious experts in this field appeals to me immensely, since I like the concept of being able to go directly to the source of information rather than through many different layers of interpretation by a variety of people and in the end being distorted (a bit like `Chinese Whispers'!).

`The Original I Ching Oracle' was inspired by Carl Gustav Jung's insights into the psyche and has been researched for more than 60 years through the Eranos Foundation of Switzerland. This stunning new work presents the oracular core of the `I Ching' as a psychological tool. The Eranos Foundation began in 1933 in Switzerland and is an East/West research centre.

The book itself is as comprehensive as I thought it would be and actually covered a lot more about the I Ching than I thought it would. For example, I found out how to use coins to use this oracle which is handy in that most cultures have access to coins. The book also covers the use of the traditional yarrow-stalk method of using the I Ching oracle.

Part One includes an introduction to the oracle, consultation procedure and language used in the oracle, as well as myth and history and correlative thinking. An extensive note listing and index to Part One is included. It is important to read about the proper consultation procedure if you want to get full benefit from using this ancient oracle.

Part Two gives a listing of each of the 64 hexagrams followed by extensive exploration of each of them. I like the way the original text is in red with additional interpretative material printed in black, leaving you to explore the symbolic meaning for yourself, if you choose to.

Part Three, Concordance, lists all the occurrences of each term appearing in the texts of the Yi Jing (I Ching). What a mammoth task! I certainly don't envy the authors this mammoth task, particularly since they have done a spectacular job in putting it all together in a coherent way. When you stop to think about the complexity of the information found in these texts, you will know what I mean.

In summary, I would highly recommend `The Original I Ching Oracle' for the reader who has an interest in the occult, synchronicity, eastern mysticism or the person looking for THE book on the I Ching. It is comprehensive, educational and practical, allowing the everyday person the opportunity to consult an oracle that was originally brought to the West through Jesuit missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the overall scheme of things, a few hundred years isn't a long time to wait for a book of this quality!

Great collection -- but beware

This is a great collection of old stories from 1965. But what I learned only after is that the paperback publishers basically split the Random House hardcover edition (ghost-edited by Robert Arthur) into two paperbacks: Stories Not for the Nervous, and More Stories Not for the Nervous. You need to buy both papers if you want all the stories that were included in the classic hardcover, Stories Not for the Nervous.

The "More" edition contains the famous story "For All the Rude People" by Jack Ritchie and the classic "Sorry Wrong Number" by Lucille Fletcher.

The "More" edition DOES NOT contain the Ray Bradbury, Carter Dickson and Fredric Brown stories, for example.

Just worth mentioning. If you are selling these books, please list them carefully.

STORIES MY MOTHER NEVER TOLD ME

Stories My Mother Never Told Me is another in the series of short story collections Dell released in the sixties and seventies. Again, Alfred Hitchcock was not involved. This collection is primarily comprised of stories with either "shock" endings or fantastical elements.

There are thirteen stories here, by quite an impressive list of authors: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shirley Jackson, Grace Amundson, Robert Arthur, Andrew Benedict, John Collier, Gerald Kersh, George Hitchcock, George Mandel, Richard Matheson, Jane Rice, Don Stanford, and Richard Wormser.

Unfortunately, not many of these stories are very spectacular. Several stories are interesting but lack punch at the end. Collier's "Witch's Money" I didn't see the point of at all. There are too many cannibal stories (you'd think one per volume would be sufficient). And there's an inferior take on Connell's classic, "The Most Dangerous Game".

On the whole, there's enough to keep fans of this type of thing entertained, but nothing particularly amazing.

This is NO "Gone Girl"

I was drawn to this book by the publicity comparing it to last year's "Gone Girl." That book was an intricately plotted mystery with stunning twists that were completely unexpected and that actually made sense. It was also extremely well-written, told through the distinctive voices of at least three separate characters. This book doesn't even come close. The author packs in a large number of subplots and mini-mysteries, leading the reader to anticipate a clever and unifying resolution that will tie all the loose threads together in a surprising and satisfying manner. No such luck. Without giving spoilers, I think I can safely say that many (most?) of the subplots in the book are resolved in ways that appear wholly arbitrary and have no connection to the central mystery of what happened to Amelia. The resolution of one of the mysteries (involving the author of a particularly vicious school gossip blog) ultimately turns on a character's wholly implausible motivation that is casually tossed off in a single sentence. Also, unlike "Gone Girl," the two narrators (and just about every other character) speak with utterly interchangeable voices; the author's attempt to create a distinctive 15-year-old's narrative voice largely consists of throwing in the word "like" a lot.

Particularly disturbing to me was the poor editing of this book, which is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. (I read the Kindle version, so I don't know if the same mistakes appear in the print edition.) The author's bio tells us that she attended Vassar College and graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. So one would hope that she might know the difference between "your" and "you're," "then" and "than," "passed" and "past," "peeked" and "peaked," "confident" and "confidant," "reined" and "reigned," "overdo" and "overdue" (yes, a character says "don't overdue it," and isn't talking about a library book)... and might actually look up how to spell designer Donna Karan (not Donna Karen). As a reader, I found each of these errors painfully distracting, and the large number of them is really inexcusable. I've seen fewer errors in self-published porn on Amazon than in this major HarperCollins release.

I'm giving this an extra star because it held my interest and I read it in two days, but only because I was anticipating a payoff that never came.

Teenage cruelty - Mother's love

Reconstructing Amelia reminds me of another book I loved "Sister". In both cases, we have a heart-breaking tale of a woman who will do whatever it takes to get to the truth of a love-ones so called suicide. In this case, single mother Kate Baron cannot believe that her high achiever/perfect 15 year old daughter Amelia jumped from the roof of her New York private school. Kate harbors guilt about the long hours she works at her prestigious law firm. Kate believes that the bond she had with Amelia was strong and that the time they spend together was quality.

Reconstructing Amelia swings back and forth between alternating chapters; Kate in the present and Amelia approximately 1 month before her death to slowly reveal what happened on the roof. We quickly learn that both Kate and Amelia had secrets that are also revealed through snippets from Amelia's E-mail/face-book page and a scathing school gossip blog. Amelia had recently been pegged to join an elitist all girls club at school. As a pledging, Amanda becomes enamored with one if its founding members, Dylan, and makes an enemy of another vindictive club member, Zadie. Amelia's secretive/time consuming membership in this club called the Magpies also causes tension between her self-centered boy/crazy best friend Sylvia. "Reconstructing Amelia" is reminiscent of Donna Tartt's "The Secret History". It tackles very relevant subjects such as emotional bullying, teen-age isolation, autism, and sexuality. Amelia was a believable and likable teen-ager. Kate's guilt and regret were palpable as she slowly begins to uncover the many facets she did not know of her daughters life.

Reconstructing Amelia is a well written story about cruel teen-age behavior and a coming-of- age story. For Kate Baron, a lesson in how secrets from the past can influence your future. Reconstructing Amelia is highly recommended for the appropriate reader including a young adult. Those looking to read a page-turner murder/suspense mystery may be disappointed.

The writing is worse than sparkly vampires!

"...Because you don't want to, like, get into the deets of your kid's Facebook page. I mean, I'm twenty-four, and I'm a pretty scrubbed-up guy and whatevs, but my 'rents would stroke out if they saw my whole page. You've gotta filter it for ma and pa. I mean, who wants to see their kid doing body shots, like, ever?"

Seriously. This is a direct quote. I like to think I'm young enough to know how "the kids" are talking these days, and I don't know a single soul that talks like that. Not even 24 year old "stoner" IT Tech guys, like she is trying to portray this character. It's as though the author watched a bunch of terrible teen movies to get some lingo, took some of what she remembered from being a teenager herself, and then tried desperately to sound like she knows how kids/young adults talk today. All this in a book that's supposed to be for adults...? No thanks.
The beginning of the book was rough going, and every time we're in the vantage point of the teenagers, the writing is horrid like the above quote. After I read that line, I literally couldn't stomach anymore, so I have no idea how this book ends....
