This work draws upon a host of late antique and medieval sources to examine selected Muslim exegeses of Moses in the Quran. The Muslim exegetical image of Moses in the Quran is linked with ancient Sumerian stories of Gilgamesh, various versions of the Alexander romance (Ethiopic, Syriac, Persian), Aramaic translations of the Abraham story in Genesis, and rabbinic accounts of the Ten Lost Tribes in the Talmud and the Midrash. Using approaches from Biblical Studies, History of Religions, Folklore Studies, and Judeo-Arabic Studies, this book suggests how Muslim exegesis of the Quran is purposeful in its appropriation and adaptation of elements consonant with Jewish and Christian interpretation and theology of the Bible.

About the Author
Brannon Wheeler is the founding Director of the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies and Professor of History at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He received his PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago and has been a visiting scholar at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, the College of Shariah and Islamic Studies at Kuwait University, the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies at the University of Bergen in Norway, and the American University of Kuwait. Prof. Wheeler has authored and edited seven books and is Editor of the book series and journal of Comparative Islamic Studies.

Powerful and deeply moving.

Vance Packard, in researching his book "The Status Seekers," found that upward mobility in the United States was much more difficult than Americans would like to believe, and that those who were successful made it largely by cutting ties to their roots. Although framed in the context of ethnicity--Richard Rodriguez' book makes that same point. Moving up from working class to upper middle class promised success and acceptance and self-respect, but getting there was a little like edging out onto the ice, feeling inadequate and fearful that at any moment he might fall through. This book will resonate with anyone--immigrant or not, minority or not--who has made such a journey. Rodriguez scathingly criticizes affirmative action and bi-lingual education programs, correctly identifying the first as promoting socially crippling labels--"disadvantaged minority"--and the second as an obstacle to what he sees as the keys to success in America--a solid education and learning to speak and write English well. Rodriguez discovers early on what many of those with romantic notions about their ethnic or racial heritage eventually come to realize--that he is an American. But in the sadness he feels at the growing distance between himself and his parents, he fails--and several previous reviewers of this book fail--to note one very important thing. Upward mobility occurs incrementally, not in one leap. Rodriguez was put in a position to get that excellent education, to learn to speak unaccented English, and to become a respected author and scholar by parents who left Mexico and the little homogeneous Catholic towns and moved to the United States. In short, by parents who had cut the ties to their own roots.

Wonderful Program Outlined Step-by-Step

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Obesity is so informative that I read it cover to cover within a couple of days before actually going back and studying the material. I am a Counselor aspiring to specialize in weight management and eating disorders. This is the best reference guide I've found related to obesity management. The authors not only guide the counselor through step-by-step modules but also includes dialogue examples with clients as well as educational client hand-outs to help foster a successful weight loss program. Of equal value and importance, clients are taught lifestyle changes to ensure long-term maintenance of a healthy weight. I recommend this book to any counselor with an interest in addressing the issue of obesity in his or her practice. Note: Purchaser of this book is granted 'limited photocopy license' for use with your own clients/patients.

Very easy read, great tips, very helpful. I'm only through the first few sessions with my patient but seems to be going well. It's a very long treatment program, so at my setting I've had to edit it and just take tips. But I like it.

I can relate. I forgived someone

Loved It! We're all human. We all make mistakes. As long as we learn from them and don't relive them. I feel once our heart is broken we are so quick to move on and try to heal the pain but in reality we need to heal ourselves before jumping into another relationship. I learned that the hard way.

The importance of being earnest.

Almost every woman secretly wants to know a man who can emote. The kind of guy who isn't afraid to be honest about what he feels, to cry when we touch his heart, to make us laugh at his mistakes because he is so loyal and human. Derrick Jaxn has written a book about such a man and I have to confess the book was not what I was expecting. Mr. Jaxn has a writing style that is easy to absorb as well as be amused by. His protagonist's often flawed but common sense approach to his life experiences are believable and understandable however wrong or misguided they are. His enthusiastic and humorous approach endears us to him. He manages to make us care deeply about him even when we know he is in for a world of pain whether or not it's well deserved. The other characters in the story didn't resonate with me in the same way our hero did. There was often a one-dimensional quality to the actions of some key characters that made me want to understand them better. At times that lack of connection I felt with a supporting character's motivations or story made the book lag for me a bit in a few places. The ending is open-ended but in the best possible way. I'm interested in what's next for Shawn but whatever it is I'm sure it will be a heartfelt journey.

Amazing, fun to read, and real.

I actually went to school with Derrick and he asked me to leave a review as a male and of course I obliged. I read this book in a coupe of hours and honestly it packs more true scenarios about trying to become a decent man at Tuskegee University. Like Derrick I grew up in a poor one parent household and I appreciated the shout out as the one white guy on campus lol. The truth of coming up with nothing and not really anyone having your back and the ones that do try and take it back from you, is a normal thing in our community. Likewise, his way of dealing with his first break up and playing the game is exactly how most men deal with the system. They start out young and naïve, get played, then play everyone until that special someone comes along. It was just a part of growing up. The relationship problems and how he kept reemphasizing putting in work to show appreciation is absolutely relevant. Just the culmination of everything he experienced brought me back to our college days and how the things that young men go through in the stages of becoming a man mentally, physically, and emotionally really gave me a new perspective. I've recommended this book to all of my friends and even random people I see just reading things. It's a fun and easy read and I can't truly say if it's entirely true or true enough because a lot of the scenarios sound familiar haha. Just ask the author. God Bless.
