Pure poetry
By Houston Reader
The gist of the negative criticism about this book, including the review by Lionel Shriver, appears to me to be an expectation for a more traditional linear path with a recognizable climax and/or resolution. I felt no wish for this and was much more moved by its poetic structure. The lyricism was amplified by the juxtapositions and the unpredictable time movements. Isn't this how the mind works? I loved the dark interiority and the emotional drift. There is a leitmotif of absences and gaps and inability to connect along with a reverence for the unobtainable dark beauty that resides therein. I don't understand criticism that demands that writing turn a way it was never meant to go and supposes that a better book would have been written.

Maybe Michael Stipe liked it...
By Ursula
but it's too edgy for me, talks way too little about music, what it takes to be a musician, performances etc. I thought this would be a book about what it's like to be a musician. I love music, bands, Rock n Roll and everything to do with music. But it seems to me that this books is more about sex than anything else. Maybe I'm too old for this book. Yes, I am too old for this book. Maybe there is that much casual sex in the music scene but calling up a guy from the street and then have (presumably unprotected) sex is too much. I spent a couple of month with a band in the (roaring?) sixties and none of that went on.

Besides that I didn't like the excessive use of descriptive adjectives. Example: Billy, black-coated, yellow-legged, pink-footed, rubber-bonneted, walks in a large circle. It makes me dizzy reading it. It could be because English is my second language. It's not that I don't understand it but it just seems to much for me. The other expample: His face, in the half-light, has an ursine, lumpy quality. He looks like a bear?

Of course describing Germans (being German) as people who hate everybody and who hate themselves didn't exactly help.

I Know It's Only Rock and Roll.
By Jamie Greco
A very convincing on the road story. Having always had an interest in the back stairwells of Rock, I found this represented what I've always heard about tours; sex and drugs are mostly an attempt to override the loneliness and boredom of the road. The characters were written deftly and I found myself able to picture them with stand ins from the music world. The severe ups and downs of the music business were well illustrated. Anyone who has dreamed of being a rock star should probably consider this book, but middle aged women who are finding themselves aged out of the world they considered their own will relate.

Learn the Root Causes of Software Vulnerabilities and How to Avoid Them

Commonly exploited software vulnerabilities are usually caused by avoidable software defects. Having analyzed tens of thousands of vulnerability reports since 1988, CERT has determined that a relatively small number of root causes account for most of the vulnerabilities.

Secure Coding in C and C++, Second Edition, identifies and explains these root causes and shows the steps that can be taken to prevent exploitation. Moreover, this book encourages programmers to adopt security best practices and to develop a security mindset that can help protect software from tomorrow’s attacks, not just today’s. Drawing on the CERT’s reports and conclusions, Robert C. Seacord systematically identifies the program errors most likely to lead to security breaches, shows how they can be exploited, reviews the potential consequences, and presents secure alternatives.

Coverage includes technical detail on how to

  • Improve the overall security of any C or C++ application
  • Thwart buffer overflows, stack-smashing, and return-oriented programming attacks that exploit insecure string manipulation logic
  • Avoid vulnerabilities and security flaws resulting from the incorrect use of dynamic memory management functions
  • Eliminate integer-related problems resulting from signed integer overflows, unsigned integer wrapping, and truncation errors
  • Perform secure I/O, avoiding file system vulnerabilities
  • Correctly use formatted output functions without introducing format-string vulnerabilities
  • Avoid race conditions and other exploitable vulnerabilities while developing concurrent code

The second edition features

  • Updates for C11 and C++11
  • Significant revisions to chapters on strings, dynamic memory management, and integer security
  • A new chapter on concurrency
  • Access to the online secure coding course offered through Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI)

Secure Coding in C and C++, Second Edition, presents hundreds of examples of secure code, insecure code, and exploits, implemented for Windows and Linux. If you’re responsible for creating secure C or C++ software–or for keeping it safe–no other book offers you this much detailed, expert assistance.

Should be called 'Secure Coding in C'
By mdub
As a C++ application developer, this book is simply not what I excpected. Most of the security issues surround the use of C API and C-style programming. The C++ parts are skimpy and often presented as safer alternatives.

Still, there is a lot of interesting stuff here. I like that each chapter goes into a lot of detail explaining how things work (stack, heap, file systems, etc) before the security holes are presented. On the other hand the chapter on threads include little more than an explenantion of how threads work and synchronize.

Overall great for C programmers, but not really for those that already embrace the C++ programming style (std::string, RAII/smart ptrs , iostreams, boost thread/filesystem, etc)

Great book for both beginner and advanced coders
By Michael
This is a great book that should be required reading for anyone interested in learning how to exploit vulnerable code and secure their C and C++ programs. This book covers a variety of topics going in depth on how to exploit vulnerable programs, describing important case studies, and securing code. Seacord provides excellent explanations for how and why C and C++ programs are so easily vulnerable to attack as well as the solutions to these vulnerabilities.

A new C/C++ programmer might find the field of hacking, bug fixes, and computer security to be quite intimidating. Writing code that is secure against security exploits can be quite difficult because of the seemingly unlimited number of ways an attacker can exploit code. Seacord's new book is exceptional because of the thoroughness with which the book covers all topics including security holes, history, and consequences of being attacked.

While reading through this book, one point that surprised me was that even perfectly reasonable code can be easily exploitable code when seen through the eyes of a malicious attacker. Many of these problems occur because of the way in which C is designed, trusting the coder to make the correct decisions in favor of fast performance. Unfortunately, new programers cannot know what the correct decision is unless they have studied the problem of attacking and securing code. This book is great material for anyone who wants to learn how to see code through the eyes of an attacker and also to defend against malicious code. This book should definitely be required reading for anyone interested in securing their C code as well as learning how attackers exploit code.

An excellent text on coding to create "hacker-proof" software...
By Michael Reeves
This is an excellent text offering an overview of all the various ways that programmers leave holes in their software that malicious hackers (Black Hat Hackers) can use to attack software. The simple examples demonstrate how a malicious hacker would write code to attack your system, and infiltrate your systems to gather information for criminal activity or use.

The author includes suggestions and examples of how to avoid programming these types of vulnerabilities into your software projects.

In today's age, more often than not, fixing "bugs" in programs is based on the business model of a Return-On-Investment (ROI). As a result, coding vulnerabilities are often left in place to avoid the expense and time required to track issues, re-code, and test the software.

Unfortunately, after reading this text, I realize that the problems didn't start with the business model, but with how programmers are trained. Beginning students of programming are not made aware of the concerns presented in this text, and how to correct for them until much later, IF at all, in their training.

As a result, students will form bad-habits in their coding paradigm that this text addresses.

This text or similar needs to be a mandate for beginning programmers. I, certainly, wish that my professors and mentors had brought the topics contained in this book to my attention as a beginning student in the field.

This text has a permanent place in my library.

Respectfully,

MJR

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star, by Nikki Sixx, Ian Gittins

In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself. When Motley Crue was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days - sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers - in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions. Here, Nikki shares those diary entries - some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre - and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more. Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and shockingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom - and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.

Merry Christmas.

Well, that's what people say at Christmas, right? Except normally they have somebody to say it to. They have their friends and family all around them. They haven't been crouched naked under a Christmas tree with a needle in their arm like an insane person in a mansion in Van Nuys.

They're not out of their minds and writing in a diary and they're not watching their holiday spirit coagulating in a spoon. I didn't speak to a single person today...I thought of calling Bob Timmons, but why should I ruin his Christmas?

I guess I've decided to start another diary this time for a few different reasons...

1. I have no friends left.

2. So I can read back and remember what I did the day before.

3. So if I die, at least I leave a paper trail of my life (nice lil suicide note).

Merry Christmas...it's just you and me, diary. Welcome to my life.

BOB TIMMONS: By Christmas 1986, Nikki had been addicted to heroin and cocaine for at least a year, possibly longer. As a drug counselor, I first met Nikki when M?tley Cr?e's manager, Doc McGhee, called me in to work with the band's singer, Vince Neil. Nikki was initially very hostile to me; he tried to get me barred from going backstage or being around them.

Nikki and I slowly formed a relationship, and early in 1986 he asked me for help with his own addictions. I advised him to go into a rehab center but he refused and said he didn't need to. He was very stubborn on that issue.

Over the years I have worked with platinum-selling artists from the Rolling Stones to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and all points in between, and let me make one thing clear from the start-M?tley Cr?e, more than anybody, wrote the book for decadence and partying. In that area they were the most extreme people I ever met, and Nikki was the most extreme of all. For many years, Nikki had one motto: I'm going to do exactly what I want to do, and fuck everybody else.

Van Nuys, 2:10 a.m.

Jason came over again today. I was touched...so there is a Santa Claus, after all. He came mooching in, with his greasy James Dean hair and his junkie eyes that are sunk so deep in his elongated face that he looks like he's wearing makeup, and he stood by the tree and asked me how my Christmas had been. Like he cares...like he doesn't know already that it was exactly the same as his. Sometimes Jason pisses me off when he tries to make small talk. He asked me how much gear I wanted, and I asked, how much have you got? And he gave me this contemptuous, sneering look and said, that must be nice...

His Betty Page-wannabe Goth girlfriend Anastasia isn't much better. Oh, she's nice enuff, but I know on the inside I'm just her meal ticket to an easier, softer life. I know she tells Jason to jump when I call because she, more than he, wants the money. Not just for the junk, they make enuff off me to maintain their cheap little habits, but she likes to decorate their little one-room rat's nest with the extra money they have left over. That's the real reason she demands he comes at my beck and call...she likes that extra cash for thrift shops and secondhand stores.

I see her as a sorta Suzie Homemaker from Hell, but it's all just a fantasy-she's stuck with a habit too...

NIKKI: My dealer Jason and I had a real love-hate relationship. I loved him because I could pick up the phone and he'd be over in twenty minutes with everything I needed. I hated him because it was killing me. He loved me because I gave him hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on a daily basis. He hated me because I was a spoiled millionaire rock star who could have anything I wanted whenever I wanted it, and usually did.

I used to ride a Honda Shadow motorcycle around the Valleys with my shirt off, totally out of my mind. One time Jason started talking about Harleys and how much he loved them. Tommy had one, so the next day I just went out and bought one and rode it to Jason's house to score. He was furious: it was his dream bike, he'd shown me a picture of it and I'd bought it. He thought I was such a spoiled brat.

Jason was as fucked on heroin as me. He was a tall, skinny guy who in another life could have been a model, or something, but he really just came off looking like a corpse. That was the real reason he hated me: we were both living for drugs, but I could afford as many as I wanted.

Van Nuys, 4:15 a.m.

The best part of freebase is before the first hit. I love that moment, right before I put the glass pipe to my lips...that moment when everything is sane, and the craving, the salivating, the excitement all feel fresh and innocent. It's like foreplay...the ache that's always better than the orgasm.

Yet as soon as I hit the pipe, within 30 seconds all hell breaks lose in my brain...and I keep on doing it and doing it and doing it and doing it, and I can't stop. Every day that I sit here and write, it's always the same. So-why? Why do I do this? I hate it...I hate it so much, but I love it even more.

The worst part of freebase is running out. But I have a new jones-speedballs of any kind. The junk just isn't enough anymore...I feel like I'm only halfway there...

TOMMY LEE: Back around Girls Girls Girls, we were starting to make shitloads of money. With money came success, power, overindulgence and experimentation. Sixx and I, in particular, took a lot of narcotics, and he would always want to push things: "Hey, how about taking these two drugs together? How about heroin and cocaine at the same time?" That period led us to this really dark fucking place. We all went to that place at various times-but Nikki seemed to like it there more than any of us.

Van Nuys, 9:40 p.m.

After I binged last night-or was it tonight-I was convinced yet again that there were people coming to get me. It was more than just shadows and voices, more than just fantasies...it was real, and I was scared to my core.

My bones were shaking...my heart was pounding...I thought I was going to explode. I'm glad I have you to talk to, to write this down...I tried to keep it all together, but then I gave in to the madness and became one with my insanity...

I always end up in the closet in my bedroom. Let me tell you about that place, my closet. It's more than a closet-it's a haven for me. It's where I keep my dope and where I keep my gun. I know when I'm in there I'm safe, at least until I get too high. I can't be out in the house-there are too many windows and I know I'm being watched. Right now it seems impossible that cops are peering in from the trees outside or people are looking at me thru the peeohole at the front door. But when the drugs kick in I can't control my mind...

Today, last night feels like a lifetime ago. But the sick thing is I could do it again tonight.

NIKKI: This was the crazy routine I had at the time. I would start out freebasing or mainlining anywhere in the house: the front room, the kitchen, the bathroom. But as soon as the coke-induced psychosis kicked in, as soon as the insanity began, I would make a beeline for my bedroom closet. That was my refuge. I would huddle in there, surrounded by my drug paraphernalia and guns, convinced that people were in the house trying to get me, or a SWAT team was outside preparing to bust me. I would be too scared to move until I came down. The only way to bring myself down quicker was heroin. Heroin would make the madness go away: it was the easy solution. It seemed to make sense at the time.

Van Nuys, 4:30 p.m.

I've been thinking about last Christmas Eve when I picked up that girl in a strip club, brought her back here on my bike, took her home the next day, then had Christmas dinner all by myself in McDonald's. I haven't made much progress I see.

Today I'm listening to Exile on Main Street, reading, laying around...tanning in the backyard, naked...today I feel like my old self. Sometimes I feel like I have two personalities. One is Nikki and one is...Sikki.

ROSS HALFIN: As a photographer I've shot M?tley Cr?e many times over the years for magazines and got particularly close to Nikki. I remember the first time I ever met him in LA we got on pretty well and decided to go for a drink that night. We sat talking in a booth. Vince Neil was in another booth with a girl, arguing, and Vince suddenly stood up and punched her in the face. I asked Nikki, "Should we sort it out?" And Nikki just laughed and said, "Let them sort it out themselves."

Insight into the life of a shattered rockstar...
By T. LaPonte
In 1987 Motley Crue recorded Girls, Girls, Girls, toured with the then unknown Guns 'n Roses, sold out shows around the country (and world) and partied like they always had a day left to live. The previous book to tell the tale of this excess, The Dirt, felt more like a glorification of the excesses of the band, even though it addressed all the drug abuse Nikki Sixx subjected himself to, subsequent overdoses that almost killed him and reemergence towards a cleaner lifestyle. Basically, you take those chapters of The Dirt and make them their own book and you have The Heroin Diaries.

The book is set up like a diary. In fact, it is a diary: the book accounts the year (Christmas 1986 to Christmas 1987) that Nikki spiraled down a deep hole of addiction and depression and kept insanely careful track of it in a notebook. In addition to his entries (cleaned up a bit so we can understand them), Nikki includes commentary from himself as well as those who were close to him at the time (it's clear that a lot of care and work was undertaken to get all of these voices lined up to tell this story).

I'm reminded of one entry where Nikki says in passing that he had a blast at a radio interview the other night, but probably got the DJ fired. The commentary afterwards is the DJ's account of the debauchery that went down that night (and, yes, he did indeed get fired).

Nikki doesn't pull any punches and asked all of his contributors to do the same. They are brutally honest and help paint a magnificent picture of what it is like to find yourself on a speeding train charging forward into a brick wall. If you ever wanted to know what the rock and roll lifestyle was like, or what it feels like to be addicted to drugs, this is the memoir for you.

It's actually amazing to me that there could possibly have been any lucid entries. We assume of course that a number of them were cleaned up by the editor, but there are times when you are stunned at Sixx's foresight into the future of the industry (the eventual downfall of the hair metal genre by the flood of copycat bands), the future of the band (that they'd make their next record a #1 album) and even his own dim foreboding of the consequences of his lifestyle.

He talks to the diary as if it were a person, as if it were his wife and only confidant in the world during that year (and it probably was). He addresses it with things like, "I have to go to the show now, but I'll see you when I get back tonight." When he departs without an entry for several days (sometimes simply because he is sober and sane) he is always apologetic and makes jokes about how he only writes to it when he is on drugs.

The book pages are broken up with scribblings, notes that presumably came out of the original dairy (To Do lists, lost lyric ideas, notes and the like), drug abuse inspired art and photographs of the people and places addressed, as well as song lyrics from a whole career of Sixx's songwriting. There are Motley Crue songs, songs from his 58 solo album, and songs from bands Nikki has adored in his life and reflect his lifestyle then and now.

Each chapter is a month in the year, with an introduction, intermission and afterward included to set us up, take a break to reflect and plow forward into the future. The afterward in particular is interesting, because in it Sixx explains what happened in his life after that year: getting on and off the drugs, his failed marriages, his struggling band, his solo projects; everything (he calls it his Life After Death). It goes up to and beyond everything covered in The Dirt, and answers a number of niggling questions leftover from that book, like what was going on during the Girls Tour, what did some of the people mentioned in that book think about things discussed (Slash talking about his interactions with Nikki back then and his own struggling band and drug addictions), or whatever had become of certain events (like all that drama with Vanity).

I found myself taking the ups (yes, there were good days) and downs along with Nikki on his ride of drug use, paranoia, rage, attempts at detox, thrills and pitfalls of touring, women, joys of songwriting and love of music, falling off the wagon, struggling on, wondering if he was killing himself, hoping for a way out, dying and coming back to life. I found myself reading an entry, wondering a question about it, and having it answered by the commentary. I also found myself wondering if the now clean and sober Vanity, turned Evangelist, is really any less insane than she was back then. Sure the drugs are gone, but the woman seems like she has a few permanent screws loose (there's one entry where she rambles on about the devil, leaving you thinking, "huh?," and then there's Nikki's commentary under hers going "Huh?" as well: fantastic!).

The book has a message and Nikki Sixx has a hope that by writing this, that by laying his weaknesses bare for the world to see, that maybe that message can get through to people: the tunnel is dark but there is a light at the end, and even though it's probably better if you don't get into that tunnel in the first place, just because you are there doesn't mean there is no hope for you.

I'm definitely sold on this book, as I was already sold on the sountrack weeks ago. I highly recommend it to fans of the band, fans of rock and roll, people interested in learning about the dangers of excess and any open-minded and curious individuals in general. It's a good read all around.

Brutally Honest Look into the Life of Addiction
By cstlife
Kudos to Nikki Sixx and those close to him who were not afraid to be brutally honest about the struggles and madness of addiction as it relates to both the addict, and the people that surround them as well. Nikki bares his soul in this memoir of what it was like to live a year imprisoned in substance abuse and depression. The story is told as a year of actual diary entries that Nikki kept during the Girls, Girls, Girls period of Motley Crue. Nikki's story includes tales of debauchery that includes the members of Motley Crue, Guns n' Roses, Ratt, Vanity, and various others. In between the diary entries, there is commentary from Nikki and the people in his life that explain a little more about the diary entry and what was going on at the time.

I admire Nikki for putting it all out there in the hopes of helping others who may find themselves in the arms of addiction. This book may also help those who have loved ones lost in addiction to have a look into the mind of an addict to get a better understanding of how addiction controls not only the mind, but the body as well.

A great book that'll make you pull your hair out in frustration as you read insights into what Rock n Roll really is about.
By Mr. P. G. Lewis
I picked this book up after reading Motley Crew, The Dirt, and would say first of all, if you've not read that, make sure you do as it's much better in my view.

But that said, this personal account, a year in the life of Nikki Sixx frustrated me, made me laugh out loud, pulled on heart strings and generally was a great book to read.

My reservation, a rating of three stars, comes from the fact that I found the diary entry, as chapters, slightly off putting as they were also followed up with insight / feedback from later dates from the people talked about in the diary entires. Whilst I got used to it, it meant the start of the book wasn't as smooth for me as usual (yes, a strange bit of feedback but feedback nonetheless)..

I'll also remind you that I've read The Dirt and absolutely loved that book more than this one (sorry Nikki!!). But I really did love learning more about Nikki himself and his views (drug addled, sane, absolutely mental and down and out broken that they are)

Basically, if you like Motley Crew, Rock n Roll and books on what it used to be like in the "good ol days" this is one you should read.

Personally, I wish Nikki Sixx all the best in the world as well. I formed a strange bond with him reading these personal diary entries.

Solid, practical information. Easy to read and apply.
By Psychology Professional
This is one of the best books available about the use of AAT in mental health practice. I've reviewed most of them for some research I'm doing in the field, and Dr. Chandler's is thorough, based on the latest research, easy to read and absorb, and filled with very practical information. She covers the tremendous benefits of this type of work along with necessary cautions, and emphasizes the importance of proper training and credentialing. The book is ideal for people just entering this fascinating field, but there is also lots of useful information for more experienced AAT practitioners as well.

Buy this one first!
By Amy L. McCortney
I read this book in one sitting!!! I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole thing! This book is a spectacular addition to the counseling field in its own right, and fills an important gap left by other animal-assisted therapy (AAT) texts. Dr. Chandler has collected in a very engaging and readable form all one needs to know to effectively conduct AAT. I found the information and guidelines on AAT particularly useful, especially the sections emphasizing examples of therapeutic responses, uses of animals assisting in therapy, and the various requirements for certification. The pictures and descriptions of Dr. Chandler's own work with her 3 co-therapists were fun and informative as well. Before you buy any other book on AAT, buy this one first; read it, read it again, and then see the difference AAT really makes for counseling clients. On second thought, don't buy any other AAT books; this is the only one you'll need.

Well-written practical guide to using digestive enzymes
By A Customer
Wonderful account of using digestive enzymes to help the authors family with PDD-NOS and Asberger's, sensory integration disorder, encopresis, IBS, and chronic migranes. It also includes many accounts of other families successfully using digestive enzymes for treating digestive disorders, autism related conditions, and information on relief for arthritis, cancer and other conditions. Wonder how all these conditions are related? Wonder how digestive enzymes could possibly help? Read the book. There is an amazing amount of research on the topic. Chapter three has to be the most interesting and understandable description of the human digestive system and related disorders ever written. I started using the digestive enzymes after reading the book and finally have relief from a life-long battle with irritable bowel syndrome. Plus my arthritic joints are not as sore. Amazing, but logical after you read this book.

Children's concerns.
By Amazon Customer
The preface of this book talks about it being information about enzymes for all ages when in fact it discusses mainly issues having to deal with children with autism or autism spectrum disorders. It is not written in a consise manner and information is hard to pull from all of the anecdotes and parental, mostly motherly, comments. I would not recommend it to adults seeking digestive and enzyme information.

Easy to Digest
By surewords
About ten years ago, I read Enzyme Nutrition by Dr. Edward Howell, and found it to be interesting and informative. Unfortunately, much of the research and information was outdated, so I sought other enzyme related books. It took ten years before I found a book I could recommend, and this is it. Unlike nearly all of the other enzyme books out there, in which the authors promote a particular product or manufacturer that they have a vested interest in, Ms. Defelice gives a very refreshing unbiased approach to the subject of enzymes. Although she refers to one particular enzyme product in the book, this is likely because at the time of publication, it was the only product available capable of giving the results she described (in great detail). On her website, [...] she lists several other enzyme products that have since been found to be useful.

The author writes in a very friendly, easy to understand style...her detailed description of the human digestive system and its processes is one of the clearest I've ever read. She gives a sense of being an educated scientist, investigator, and concerned mother all in one.

If you or anyone you know has digestive problems, autism, autoimmune disorders, etc. then please read this book. And if you simply want to better understand enzymes and their use in human health, this is by far the best book on the subject!

Pterosaurs: Natural History, Evolution, Anatomy, by Mark P. Witton

For 150 million years, the skies didn't belong to birds--they belonged to the pterosaurs. These flying reptiles, which include the pterodactyls, shared the world with the nonavian dinosaurs until their extinction 65 million years ago. Some pterosaurs, such as the giant azhdarchids, were the largest flying animals of all time, with wingspans exceeding thirty feet and standing heights comparable to modern giraffes. This richly illustrated book takes an unprecedented look at these astonishing creatures, presenting the latest findings on their anatomy, ecology, and extinction.

Pterosaurs features some 200 stunning illustrations, including original paintings by Mark Witton and photos of rarely seen fossils. After decades of mystery, paleontologists have finally begun to understand how pterosaurs are related to other reptiles, how they functioned as living animals, and, despite dwarfing all other flying animals, how they managed to become airborne. Here you can explore the fossil evidence of pterosaur behavior and ecology, learn about the skeletal and soft-tissue anatomy of pterosaurs, and consider the newest theories about their cryptic origins. This one-of-a-kind book covers the discovery history, paleobiogeography, anatomy, and behaviors of more than 130 species of pterosaur, and also discusses their demise at the end of the Mesozoic.

Review
"A comprehensive introduction. . . . Witton manages to make this an attractive book for the layperson and bring these flying fossils to life."--Natural History

"Witton's new tribute to pterosaurs gives these fantastic fossil creatures a much-needed makeover in two crucial ways. Not only does the book bring the science of pterosaurs up to date--at long last following-up other classics such as David Unwin's The Pterosaurs and Peter Wellenhofer's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs--but Witton is a highly-skilled and imaginative artist who ably reconstructs the bones of the animals and brings them back to life in startling poses. Witton's pterosaurs are fantastical creatures deserving their own time in the spotlight. . . . Witton's combination of style and substance makes Pterosaurs a true treasure and an absolute must for anyone curious about the extinct flyers."--Brian Switek, National Geographic.com

"This really is the ultimate guide to pterosaurs, providing us with a richer view of pterosaur diversity and behaviour than allowed in the two previous great volumes on the group (Wellnhofer 1991, Unwin 2005) and containing a substantial amount of review and analysis of pterosaur ecology and functional morphology."--Darren Naish, Scientific American

"A solid review of the whole of the Pterosauria that'll be genuinely useful for researchers for many years. I'm sure I'll be typing 'Witton, (2013) stated . . .' quite a lot in the future and that, if anything, should be a good measure of how I rate this as a scientific text. Now go buy a copy and read it, it really is very good."--Dave Hone, Pterosaur.Net

"[Witton] presents the uncertainties of science but never shies away from making his opinion clear. [He] respects the complexities [of scientific writing] without allowing them to clump up the text. . . . I can wholeheartedly recommend the book already."--David Mass, DRIP

"Pterosaurs would make an excellent addition to any reference collection and especially that of an advanced (adult or young adult) lay-reader."--Greg Leitich Smith, GSL Blog

"I can tell you that it is not only a fascinating bit of text, its illustrations will leave you gaping in awestruck amazement."--John E. Riutta, Well-read Naturalist

"[Witton] combines his deep knowledge of the subject as a palaeontologist at the University of Portsmouth (U.K.) with his skills as an artist, and he has a flair for informal but accurate writing. His 292-page book is the most comprehensive and authoritative book to come along since Peter Wellnhofer's classic Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs back in 1991."--James Gurney, artist and author of the Dinotopia book series

"The joy of Pterosaurs is how it brings long extinct animals to life."--Jeff Hecht, New Scientist

"Learn all about flying reptiles in this artfully illustrated overview of pterosaur research."--Science News

"Highly recommended."--EverythingDinosaur.com

"Once dragons flew through Mesozoic skies! They were pterosaurs, and Witton offers a rich and extensive account of what science knows about these extinct creatures. . . . For those who want an introduction to flying reptiles or the craft of scientific research, this title is a great choice."--Eileen H. Kramer, Library Journal

"Beautifully laid out, clearly written, loaded with handsome illustrations, Witton's book invites you to dip in for delicious tidbits or hunker down for the equivalent of a superb lecture series."--Wilson's Bookmarks, Christianity Today

"This is a book of impeccable scholarship, but it is also very readable for the non-scholar and amateur pterosaurophile. . . . A wonderful book!"--Rabbi Dr Charles H Middleburgh, Middleburgh Blog

"Though the writing style clearly targets the book to nonexperts, it does not dilute its realized value for professional paleontologists or teachers of paleontology. This is a very skillful presentation: a brief introductory paragraph or two leads quickly into an advanced discussion. The illustrations are excellent, including nice reconstructions by the author and very high-quality photographic reproductions of original key fossils. Overall, this is a very well-done book that belongs in any library with a vertebrate paleontology collection."--Choice

"Although the text is mostly technical, directed at an informed audience, it is written with a humorous slant. Everyone will get something out of reading this book. . . . This is a fantastic book!"--Randy Lauff, Canadian Field Naturalist

"Witton's Pterosaurs is a remarkable visual feast, packed full of novel art as well as excellent photographs that the author clearly worked hard to obtain. There are, in fact, illustrations of some sort on virtually every single page--you will never get bored of looking at this book. . . . If you like or are even vaguely interested in pterosaurs, you really need this book."--Darren Naish, Historical Biology

From the Back Cover

"This book is both academically interesting and truly fun to read. That is a difficult balance to reach, but Witton does an excellent job of it by using a lighthearted, informal writing style in combination with a well-referenced, serious scientific review. An invaluable reference."--Michael Habib, University of Southern California

One more excellent book on pterosaurs
By eagseags
Pterosaurs, flying reptiles from the Mesozoic, have always taken a back seat to dinosaurs in terms of popular books. I own three books on pterosaurs:
“The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs” by Peter Wellnhofer from 1991.
“The Pterosaurs: From Deep Time” by David Unwin from 2005.
"Pterosaurs" by Mark Witton from 2013.

These are all excellent books. The last is the subject of today's review. You should not confuse the Witton book "Pterosaurs" with a book from 2012 "Pterosaurs: Flying Contemporaries of the Dinosaurs," of which Witton is one of three coauthors.

By the way, the first popular book on pterosaurs "Dragons of the Air" (1901) by H.E. Seeley is available as a free e-book at [...]

Witton is at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Portsmith. He is a freelance artist as well as a paleontologist and has a blog at [...] .

I will start with a little background on pterosaurs, which will make further discussions more understandable. Pterosaurs are the first vertebrates that learned powered flight. Compared to most vertebrates, pterosaurs tend to have extremely large heads and extremely small legs relative to their torsos. Many pterosaurs had a large ridge of bone above their dorsal vertebrae called the notarium, to which the scapula sometimes articulated. Bird wings are made of feathers attached to their (relatively short arms). Bat wings are made from skin stretched between the body and between five elongated fingers. Pterosaur wings were made from skin stretched from the body to an enormously elongated fourth finger, which is unique among vertebrates. There are enough fossils preserving the soft tissue of pterosaur wings, which is typically a few millimeters thick, that we can tell the wings contained, starting from the ventral side, a layer of blood vessels, a layer of muscle, and a layer of semi-rigid fibers. The wings and body of pterosaurs probably had some kind of fur or protofeathers, it is hard to tell which. All pterosaurs had a unique splint-like bone at the wrist called the pteroid, probably used to change the shape of the leading edge of the wing.

Despite having a very different wing structure, pterosaurs are convergent with birds on may features. They had bones with very thin walls (presumably for lightness). They had very rigidified ribcages, and there is evidence in the bones for air sacs. Presumably these features could have allowed for an efficient one-way respiration system as in birds. Their brains tended to be large and globular, like a bird’s, and not elongated like a typical reptile’s. All these point to a life as agile fliers requiring large amounts of energy. (Forget the antiquated idea of pterosaurs as gliders needing to jump off high cliffs to fly.)

Classically pterosaurs are divided into two types: rhamphorhynchoids (named for Rhamphorhynchus) and pterodactyloids (named for Pterodactylus). Rhamphorhynchoids lived from the Late Triassic until the Early Cretaceous. They generally were small and had large toothed heads on a short neck. They also had long tails with a rhomboid shaped vane at the end. Pterodactyloids lived from the Middle Jurassic until the Late Cretaceous. The had large heads on long necks, but no tails. Many of them were toothless.

The fact that pterosaur bones are hollow means that most fossils end up looking like “roadkill,” and the fine anatomical details, such as the shape of the joints, is usually erased.

Aspects of pterosaurs that were mysteries for 100 years are not so much of a mystery since about a decade ago. There are enough well-preserved specimens (e.g. from China) that we know where the wing membrane attached to the body. We have enough pterosaur trackways that we have a good idea of how they handled themselves on land: as quadrupeds walking with their legs underneath, walking on wrist pads and the sole of the foot. There are now several known pterosaur eggs, and we know pterosaur babies probably could fly as soon as they hatched. What remains a mystery is which branch of archosaurs the pterosaurs arose from. Also we do not know a specific animal that could be the "protopterosaur" ancestor, that could perhaps climb trees and glide in the style of a flying squirrel, but not fly.

Witton's "Pterosaurs" has 26 chapters, the first 8 deal with general findings on pterosaurs, their anatomy, how they flew, how they got along on the ground, how they reproduced, etc. This is very similar to what you find in Unwin's book. One interesting perspective from Witton is about the idea of "weight reduction." The classical idea is that pterosaurs acquired hollow bones and air sacs to make them lighter and more airworthy. Witton reverses this and says the idea is to take animals of a constant weight and make them larger (e.g. more surface area for flight). I'm not sure one can really distinguish the two in practice, but it is thought-provoking. Another idea presented by Witton is that the masses of pterosaurs are underestimated by most workers in the field, such that the mass per wing area is much smaller than that of living birds. If we allow for larger masses in pterosaurs, we can allow for more powerful muscles, which are needed for flight.

The real uniqueness of Witton's "Pterosaurs," compared to Unwin's book, is in the15 chapters on individual pterosaur subgroups. (There is a small irony here because the taxonomy is based on Unwin's system.) Each group is presented in detail: a discussion of each genus, unique features, the probable lifestyle, etc. Literature references are included. These chapters can be a little tough to get through in spots, since they are something like a professional review article, but that makes this book useful for professionals as well as interested amateurs like us. The first thing you learn is that pterosaur group names are pretty hard to remember (Anurognathidae, Wukongopteridae, Ctenochasmotoidae, etc.) But the important thing is that if you look within each group there is a tremendous diversity: longer vs. shorter heads, teeth vs. no teeth, crests vs. crests, larger vs. smaller legs and feet, long wings vs. short, claws on the hand vs. no claws, etc. Thus, pterosaurs were probably as diverse in anatomy and lifestyle as birds are now. Witton points out that the classical division into rhamphorhynchoids and pterodactyloids might not be useful in the sense that while pterodactyloids are probably a monophyletic group, the rhamphorhynchoids are probably a collection of primitive types, that might not be closely related to each other. Also, while we are pretty sure more groups of pterosaur are not likely to be identified, we know hardly anything about some groups like the Lonchodectidae because their remains are just so fragmentary.

Pterosaurs can have some really bizarre anatomy. For my money, the most bizarre snout belongs to Pterodaustro (from South America). Both its mandible and maxilla are upturned. The lower jaw has hundreds of extremely elongated teeth arranged in a comb-like formation. One can only imagine Pterodaustro using this apparatus to filter feed like a flamingo. The most bizarre crest is found in Nyctosaurus (from Kansas). The crest branches into two cylindrical spars, one pointing up and one pointing back. The crest is about three times as long as the skull and about 20% longer than the head, body, and legs combined. You look at this animal and your first thought is "No way that can be real." However, there are two specimens with the crest intact, so there is no doubt.

Speaking of crests, my impression from "Pterosaurs" is that the proportion of pterosaurs with crests is higher than anyone suspected before. While the crests of many pterosaurs are bony, or partly bony, some crests consist only of soft tissue. We see more of the latter now because we have more specimens with preserved soft tissue and/or we now know to look for soft tissue in fossils with ultraviolet light. The original Pterodactylus from Solnhofen, for instance, one of the first pterosaurs known, has a soft tissue crest along its entire snout. While a number of authors have suggested crests could have some aerodynamic or thermal function, it is most likely they were for sexual display since closely related species have different crests.

Pterosaurs attained a size range that birds never came close to matching. Quetzalcoatlus (from Texas) is usually depicted as the largest known pterosaur in popular books, but Quetzalcoatlus belongs to a family of extremely large pterosaurs, the Azhdarchidae. The largest known is Hazegopteryx. It probably stood as tall as a giraffe, had wingspan of about 11 meters, and had the longest skull (3 meters) of any non-marine tetrapod. It is interesting that there are many large flightless birds, but as far as we know, there are no secondarily-flightless pterosaurs, even among the largest ones.

The writing style of "Pterosaurs" is pretty informal, despite the "review article" format, sometimes verging on "cuteness." I don't mean this in a bad way. I was amused by section headings such as "In the Absence of Proper Data, Speculate Wildly" and figure captions such as "Tupandactulus imperator doing his best Clint Eastwood impression on the scrubby hinterland of the Aptian Crato lagoon."

"Pterosaurs" has the expected photographs of fossil specimens and some very clear diagrams, plus world maps showing where key pterosaurs fossils are found. The pictures that depict living pterosaurs are of two types: the pterosaur in a standard "takeoff" pose, such that different genera can be compared, and the pterosaur in "real life" situations, flying, fighting, eating, etc. All of the restorations are watercolors done by the author. I enjoyed them and they get the point across, but they struck me as more "artistic" than "scientific", compared to comparable illustrations by, say, John Gurche.

This book is well worth reading and is available at a reasonable price.

Pterosaurs: Natural History, Evolution, Anatomy
By P. Nicholson
A great source book from someone who seems to eat, drink and sleep Pterosaurs. Witton covers everything imaginable from theories of what the forebears of pterosaurs might have been, up through a detailed examination of the amazing structure underlying what appear to be simple leather wings and the probable ecological niches each species inhabited and adapted to... to how they walked on the ground and launched themselves into the air. All with great illustrations. Highly recommended.

A feast of the first vertebrate experiment with flight--ornithologists take note!
By Richard D. Norris
Before reading this book I knew almost nothing about pterosaurs but now I see them for the amazing, ecologically diverse creatures they were--an experiment with vertebrate flight that produced all sorts of interesting parallels with birds. I'm a professional paleontologist, so for me the discussion of bones and taxonomy is no barrier. But like many readers, I expect, the most interesting parts of this lovely book lie in the discussions of paleoecology, the controversies in `pterosaurology' and the fuzzy, still emerging vision of an alternate world of flying animals. Witton is a good writer--witty, a bit informal, and an expert with a skill at telling a story well. For me, it is a perfect combination of wit and fact; I can gloss over the bone names and inside-controversy if I want to glean the meat of how the animals worked and what their world was like. His descriptions of these animals as living things are not particularly technical and should be accessible to an general reader. People who know something about birds will likely particularly enjoy this book. But, increasingly as I read each chapter while brushing my teeth or sitting on the pot, I have taken to absorbing it all. Indeed, I have taken to comparing this book very favorably to other works of this kind, such as Long's "The Rise of Fishes" (much more taxonomic than it should be) and similar books that survey major groups. Three cheers for Mark Witton!

Witton is also a good illustrator, and has put flesh, color, and speculative reality on his pterosaurs. The book is illustrated with lots of paintings, some of which are a bit more artistic than fully informative, but which give you a sense (in an `informed-speculation' way) of what these animals were like as living things. He also has lovely photographs of the actual specimens and anatomical drawings of the skeletons and other features of each group of pterosaurs. It is handy to have the photographs in this book since they help me appreciate how scrappy a lot of the fossil material actually is. That realization, in turn, tempers one's acceptance of the fully fleshed-out paintings and skeletal drawings.

Still, there is enough there (amazingly, for such delicate creatures) that we gain a sense for just how diverse and incredible pterosaurs were as a group. There were flamingo-like pterosaurs, nightjar-like pterosaurs, and albatross-like pterosaurs. There were pterosaurs with huge, likely brightly colored crests, and ones with scimitar-wings and broad-rounded wings. The emerging image is of a group with huge diversity that has explored many of the same alleyways as birds. At the same time, pterosaurs were also not just an early try at being birds, since they seem to have many unique features of their ecology. Pterosaurs went in for a huge variety of head crests--massive, elaborate affairs that provided an alternative way to impress mates compared to peacock's tails. Their mouths were crammed with baskets of teeth--a distinctly un-bird-like approach to life. Further, many pterosaurs had dinky tails that seemingly must have given them oddly unbalanced bodies considering their long necks and big heads. Just how did these animals fly without nose-diving into the ground? It is unfortunate that we have just a few scraps of them in the fossil record, but what a record it is turning out to be! Glorious diversity, most wonderful!
