The Jew is Not My Enemy: Unveiling the Myths that Fuel Muslim Anti-Semitism, by Tarek Fatah

A liberal Muslim and critically acclaimed author explores the historical, political, and theological basis for centuries of Muslim animosity towards Jews, debunking long-held myths and tracing a history of hate and its impact today.

More than nine years after 9/11 and 60 years after the creation of the state of Israel, the world is no closer to solving, let alone understanding, the psychological and political divide between Jews and Muslims. While countless books have been written on the subject of terrorism, political Islam, and jihad, barely a handful address the theological and historical basis of the Jew—Muslim divide. Following the terrorist attacks on Mumbai in November 2008, in which Pakistani jihadis sought out and murdered the members of a local Jewish centre, Tarek Fatah began an in-depth investigation of the historical basis for the crime.

In this provocative new book, Fatah uses extensive research to trace how literature from as early as the seventh century has fueled the hatred of Jews by Muslims. Fatah debunks the anti-Jewish writings of the Hadith literature, takes apart the Arab supremacist doctrines that lend fuel to the fire, and reinterprets supposed anti-Jewish passages in the Quran. In doing so he argues that hating Jews is against the essence of the Islamic spirit and suggests what needs to be done to eliminate the agonizing friction between the two communities.

From Publishers Weekly
Fatah (Chasing a Mirage) describes the tensions between followers of Islam and of Judaism, attributing the lack of understanding and compassion between these groups to the scriptures they study and propaganda spread by radicals. Fatah explains that from a young age Muslim children are taught to pray for the downfall of other religions, especially Judaism, and though "most of us ignore it as nothing more than the rhetoric of the screaming cleric," lingering suspicion about Jews remains "for our entire lives, even if we never meet one." He also examines beliefs that many Pakistani Muslim's voice, such as blaming Israel for the Bird Flu, and the fact that in order to be considered an intellectual or a faithful Muslim, one is expected to wholeheartedly embrace these rumors as fact; to speak out against propaganda is slanderous and those who doubt the teachings of religious leaders are dehumanized. Pakistani textbooks and TV shows support these rumors as facts, widely disseminating anti-Semitism daily. In spite of all this, Fatah offers examples of Muslims supporting, befriending, or even saving Jewish people, demonstrating the importance of tolerance and understanding in a world full of opposing beliefs and ideologies. From Booklist
Most stringent Muslim critiques of Islam are written by scholars for scholars. Journalist Fatah knows that scholarship but writes for general readers—moreover, on an aspect of Islam rarely publicly discussed in the West. Genocidal hatred of the Jews is endemic among Muslims. But, Fatah argues, it is fueled by a biography of Muhammad composed long after his death, and is a relatively recent development. After limning the 2008 Chabad House massacre in Mumbai and noting Christian anti-Semitism’s influence on Muslims, Fatah turns to the early-twentieth-century mufti of Palestine’s alliance with Hitler; Israel’s ill-advised aid to Hamas to check Arafat’s PLO; and anti-Semitism in the hadith, or sayings of Muhammad, and, finally, in two spellbinding chapters looks at the prophet-directed massacre of a whole Jewish tribe that had stayed out of the 627 Battle of the Trench—according to the biography. That incident probably never happened and, with the vicious hadith, thoroughly contradicts the true text of the Qur’an. This strikes a strong blow for Muslim-Jewish rapprochement, reconciliation, and loving fellowship. --Ray Olson

Interesting Insights into a Difficult Problem
By L. King
Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah tackles the issues of antisemitism within Islam - its origins and the mechanisms that sustain it. He's a modern secular Indo-Pakistani immigrant Canadian Muslim journalist of Hindu ancestry - a man of many pasts. The book begins with a 2006 trip to his native Pakistan where in a land of no Jews he found widespread examples of antisemitic prejudice. Jews were accused of causing both the 2004 tsunami and the "Bird Flu" epidemic. A shopkeeper hands him a copy of "The Protocols of the Elders of Ziyon", assuring him that it's true. (pp 18). Peshawar millionaires with retinues of servants complain how Muslims are marginalized by Jews, Israel and the United States then asked how they could get a green card for their sons so that the family could migrate to the US. Then in 2008 Punjabi villagers make special pains to target the Jewish Chabad centre in Mumbai, their controller advising them that killing one Jew is worth more than killing 50 people.

Of course we know the problem is much broader and the author supplies related examples throughout the Muslim Ummah. Even the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Matathir bin Mohamad, a man Fatah has admired, subscribed to the belief that it was the "Jewish Lobby" that was behind the war in Afghanistan, and that Jews had to be contained in ghettos and periodically massacred in Europe to contain their influence.

Fatah traces multiple causes of this poisonous dysfunction. Chapters 3 & 2 provide a thorough albeit out of sequence background on Palestinian/Arab powerbroker Hajj Amin al-Hussayni and those he influenced both during and after the war including Veli Kayum Khan and Sayd Qutb. Husayni, who's voice was behind the anti-Jewish riots of 1920,21 and 29, was also responsible for the Arab Strike which boycotted Jewish businesses and waged a guerrilla war from 1936-39 against the British Mandate and Arab rival clans who were more conciliatory. In 1937 he engineered the death of Lewis Andrews, the British Consul for Galilee and was forced to flee to Syria. During the late 30s and 1940s his Arab Higher Committee was largely funded by the Nazis and he spent much of the war engaged in anti-Jewish propaganda directed at the Arab world as an honoured guest of the Reich. In 1945 Husayni escaped via France to Cairo where Arab political threats were used to prevent the west from extraditing him for war crimes.

A second source is Islamofascism which the author claims distorts original the meaning and intent of the Quran by basing itself on questionable Hadiths and interpretations. In particular (Ch 6 & 7) he argues against the authenticity the Battle of the Trench as related by Ibn Ishak who wrote about the Prophet's massacre of Jewish Banu Qurayza tribe, often used to emphasize Islam's superiority and Jews' responsibility for their own death. Citing a lack of corroborating Jewish sources and physical evidence (not that the Saudis are that interested in archeology - he notes their destruction several historic sites including Mohammad's home) he concludes that this event, which would show Mohammad as a mass murderer, never happened. The problem is that many Muslims have been taught that it did and believe that the justification for these events lie in the innately evil nature of Jews.

Yet the first two influences might have died out if not for the Arab discovery of high priced oil in the 1970s. In previous decades clerics were often made fun of as inconsequential. Saudi financed madrases drilled negative imagery across the middle east resulting in a hardline politicization of Islam. In rival Shia Iran the Ayatollah Khomeini introduced the idea of clerical guardianship of the political stream. But on an everyday level communal peer pressure to conform is also a problem. Fatah's acquaintances routinely dismissed his positive reports on the status of Israeli Arabs. One Muslim couple with similar experiences confided that they could not relate this to their friends: "We have to live in our community and cannot be seen as not being anti-Israel." (pp180)

Ch. 4 asks whether or not Israel itself is unintentionally fueling anti-semitism, and here is where we differ. Fatah argues that although the Palestinians have shown great incompetence over the years, both in constructing a national infrastructure and in accepting Israeli overtures for a political settlement, it is Israel who holds all the cards. The author's real fear is that that Islamicism will triumph over secularism - resolving the conflict will take away the "oxygen" that fuels the Islamicists and antisemisitm. He recommends that if Israel is unable to get the Palestinians to the negotiating table that they unilaterally withdraw to borders of their own choosing. Fatah cites two examples of Jewish racism and notes that even though these were the exception and disowned by the vast majority of Jews and Israelis, they were blown out of proportion by Israel's enemies. I don't think unilateralism will work. Hiz b'Allah still thinks it has to liberate Lebanese territory (none is held by Israel) and withdrawal from Gaza hasn't muted Hamas' claims for liberating Al Aqsa (controlled by the Islamic Waqf) and Tel Aviv. Nor are conspiracy theories about Jewish control foreign to Arab secularists who've been influenced by both Marxist and Islamicist propaganda over their formative years. Israel should not be condemned for the imperfection of individuals within it's society that are far more prevalent in it's neighbours, especially when due process prevents instant and autocratic solutions. Even though this might not be clear in Cairo but it should be obvious in Ottawa and New York. Internalization of a new paradigm of acceptance of and collaborative partnership with an non-Muslim Modern Westernized Democratic Middle Eastern Jewish State requires Arab buy in.

Previously I've read Fatah's Chasing a Mirage , which argued for separation of mosque and state. Both books are well worth reading.

Tarek Fatah presents an unbiased view of the situation in Israel/Palestine and debunks many myths. It is extremely well written and holds the reader's attention the entire time. Much history which all of us need to know to dispell prejudices on both sides.

The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the Challenge at Tesco, by Barry Evans, Robert Mason

At Tesco, one of the world's largest retailers, senior leadership made a simple, but game-changing, decision to focus the business on its customers rather than the conventional approach of "competing with our competitors." Their strategy was deployed by building world-leading retail and supply chain operations that are both effective in delivering what customers wanted and efficient in performance and cost metrics.

The Lean Supply Chain explores how the retailer used lean thinking, loyalty and simplicity and grew under a determined supply chain strategy to achieve their dominant UK and global position.  Logistics professionals Evans and Mason look at Tesco's origins, the development of their supply chain, the continuous improvement and current developments. They include examples of Tesco's successful operations, including their rapid roll-out of store-based grocery home-delivery and the change of focus from supermarket and hypermarket development to building a network of neighborhood convenience stores and mid-sized stores in cities -- Tesco Metro and Tesco Express stores.

With examples and advice for supply chain management professionals, this book uncovers why Tesco is as successful as it is today and how they did it.

Review
"For many years Tesco has been regarded as a world-class retailer.  In this insightful book the authors detail the way in which Tesco has utilized best-in-class practices to create a highly effective and efficient supply chain.  It's timely.  The authors look in detail at how Tesco have been able to build a world-class supply chain.  It should appeal to a wide audience-not just those interested in retail." (Martin Christopher Emeritus Professor of Marketing and Logistics, Cranfield School of Management)

"Barry Evans and Robert Mason have written an essential guide not only to Tesco's development of their supply chain but also to the imaginative developments which took place within and beyond the UK's supply chains over the last five decades.  As the director responsible for introducing modern supply chain management into Rowntree and Nestlé, I worked closely with Tesco management on greatly improving service both to them and to their customers, our consumers.  While the UK food business remains highly competitive, all supply chain participants continue to work together to benefit all through jointly tackling key supply chain issues, and also by sharing point-of-sale data immediately in order to react well to consumer purchases.  The main UK manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers cooperatively developed world class Electronic Data Interchange of orders, invoices, product and location master data so that accurate data would be actioned without delay or error.  Barry and Robert very well illustrate that supply chain managers cooperate so that supply chain can be truly competitive, to the great benefit of the consumer as well as of the businesses. (Professor Tom McGuffog FCILT FCIPS)

"Highly interesting and informative analysis of the initiatives Tesco developed to establish a world-class retail supply chain.  The step-by-step explanation of the approach used is essential reading for practitioners and students of supply chain management.  Well done." (Dr. James Aitken Head of Department for Business Transformation, University of Surrey)

"Any book that analyses supply chain strategies followed by leading retailers is bound to be successful.  This book by Evans and Mason examines Tesco's supply chain strategies in a clear and succinct manner.  It will be excellent reading for academics, students, retail managers and supply chain practitioners." (Professor Michael Bourlakis Chair in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Cranfield University)

"This book provides an in-depth understanding of the constantly changing field of Lean supply chains and the approach that Tesco has taken in developing theirs into a world-class operation.  It is an essential read for anyone interested in supply chain management as it provides great insight as to how to unlock its true value as a core element of a retailer's competitive advantage." (Monica Hope Teaching Fellow, Retail and Marketing, University of Surrey)

"This book is a superlative in-depth case study of how Lean concepts, together with concepts from marketing, innovation and strategy, have combined to give Tesco an edge in grocery retailing.  The supply chain and improvement chapters would be interesting and valuable to anyone in large-scale retailing.  In particular the sections contrasting conventional wisdom with Tesco's counter-intuitive answers are illustrative of the effectiveness of Lean thinking outside manufacturing.  Following Tesco's history from early days to international giant, and their learnings along the route-what went right and wrong-provides a classic longitudinal study showing the importance of sustained leadership and purpose." (John Bicheno Founder of the MSc Lean Post-Graduate Degree at LERC)

"When I joined the Lean Enterprise Research Centre in 1997 Tesco was one of the supply chain development network research partners leading the challenge on constraints in supply chain management.  Subsequently, Tesco have consistently worked with Cardiff University developing innovative and creative new thinking to benefit their business, consumers and staff.  In 1997 Tesco were lagging in the UK grocery sector.  Shoppers would have not expected to buy clothes or other household goods under a single roof or have timed deliveries.  Most would have remembered Green Shield stamps if asked about loyalty and discount schemes.  In the intervening period the Tesco story has been that of domination balancing the value for customers, staff and the business.  While recent performance issues have caused shock these do not diminish the breakthroughs achieved for the retail sector.  This book provides transferable insights in Lean supply chain management, strategy and change for academics, students and practitioners alike.  The Lean Supply Chain reflects the need for all supply chains to understand customer value, challenge the way things have always been done and break through to higher levels of performance.  This is a very worthwhile read." (Dr. Ann Esain Former Researcher with Lean Enterprise Research Centre, Cardiff)

"[F]ascinating – for its timing as much as the overview it provides into one of the world’s most prominent retailers...Manages to offer lessons and best practices that are relevant across industries and functions while telling the Tesco supply chain story sympathetically and in-depth." (Kelly Barner Buyers Meeting Point)

"Much has been written about the Tesco supply chain and ingredients for its success-not least of all Lean thinking.  What isn't so well recognized is that this journey began, and was very advanced, several years before the perceived introduction of Lean principles in 1995 by a homegrown talented team of people drawn from all supply chain functions.  It was this team that created the bedrock for much of what is in place some 20 years later.  What the Lean process did help with is creating a framework to extend this methodology to other functions outside the Tesco internal supply chain.  This book shows that the principles of Lean do work-but only when they are matched with people who can make the difference.  If there is one thing you will learn from this book and the Tesco experience it is that great people make a great company." (Barry Knichel Former Supply Chain Development Director, Tesco)

"Robert and Barry provide a well-researched and fascinating insight into the Lean philosophy that underpinned the strategies of Tesco in the era of Leahy and Clarke.  Their work brings alive how the rigorous pursuit of Lean principles enabled the transition of an ordinary UK supermarket chain into a customer-centric contrarian global winner." (Steve Spall Former Supply Chain and Distribution Development Director, Tesco UK)

"To study Tesco with such intimacy provides a fascinating insight into the logic that underpins the Tesco model and its many evolutions that have provided a sequence of change as the organization has learned new ways to compete.  The authors provide a clarity and insight, over time, of how the forces of business and decisions have shaped the prosperity of this British household name.  The two authors have enjoyed a remarkably privileged position and have maintained the study for many years which makes for a fantastic read and the most insightful understanding of this British mega-organization.  The book is more than a book about a retailor though-it is a book on business, of challenge and dynamic markets, and how Tesco has made sense of its environment, shaped some of the market by defying tradition and convention, and how it has reacted to the turbulence of a truly global sector.  There is much to learn from this account and many lessons that should inspire managers in occupations and sectors that are far beyond retailing.  It is a blend of the thought-provoking and also of the practical aspects of running a modern business." (Nick Rich Professor of Socio-Technical Systems (Operations Management), Swansea University)

A Fair Balance of Scandal Coverage and Cross-Industry Best Practices
By Kelly McCarthy Barner
The supply chain may be the best organized in the world, but if trust and transparency are not there the commercial results will not materialize.

- The Lean Supply Chain, p. xxiv

The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the Challenge at Tesco (September 3, 2015, Kogan Page) by Robert Mason and Barry Evans is fascinating – for its timing as much as the overview it provides into one of the world’s most prominent retailers. The book’s timing is impressive (and critical) given the turbulent few years Tesco has had: including the horsemeat scandal in 2013, and an accounting scandal in 2014.

While this book is not solely about the scandals and their exact aftermath, it acknowledges them right up front and includes as many details as the publication timeline would allow – and probably a few more than that. The Preface is an absolute must-read and would stand as a B-school case study in its own right.

The basis of the book is the result of joint research done by Tesco and Cardiff Business School in the U.K. Author Barry Evans worked for Tesco’s supply chain organization for a decade. There is clear admiration for Tesco on the part of the authors, resulting in a book that is more of a calm investigation of a complex supply chain’s strengths and weaknesses than a post-crisis exposé.

The authors start by clarifying that their (and presumably Tesco’s) definition of supply chain is broader than usual, inspired by Michael Porter’s ‘value chain’ approach.

The grocery retail industry is highly competitive and operates on razor thin margins. Since, as pointed out in the book, the products offered are effectively commoditized, Tesco has had to differentiate on services, the environment in their stores, and the end-to-end consumer experience. Their investments into improving consumer sentiment are central to their business strategy.

The other core element of Tesco’s strategy is simplicity: even when they are addressing complexity. It must be simple to convert decisions into actions, and therefore systems and processes do not need to be overly complicated. In fact, this becomes a built in feedback cycle. Tesco believes in immediately converting insight into action and then they track the impact of their actions to see if they had the desired effect.

From an inside business perspective, Tesco applies simplicity in the alignment of goals, objectives, and KPIs across functions. In fact, Tesco believes that having different goals/objectives for each function allows one group to soar while another sinks. In the end, if all groups are not functioning well together and independently, the end service provided to the customer suffers.

Tesco has always leveraged data in their pursuit of customer value creation. Back as far as the late 1990’s they were treading into early ‘big data’ waters, looking at huge volumes of shopper data from their loyalty card program but needing to build a program and the supporting capabilities to apply it effectively.

The Lean Supply Chain somehow manages to offer lessons and best practices that are relevant across industries and functions while telling the Tesco supply chain story sympathetically and in-depth.

Tesco is a major British supermarket that had enjoyed a period of rapid growth in recent years, requiring the use of a highly organised, functional supply chain to keep the shelves of its stores laden with goods. This book takes a look at both the art and science of operating a Lean-inspired, functional supply chain and shows how a large retailer could utilise and benefit from this activity.

This is written with a fairly specialist, narrow audience in mind. It is by no means beginner-friendly, yet with a degree of perseverance it could still be a little goldmine for the uninitiated. For those who need to live and breathe this stuff, await the experience! The authors have done a good job in crystallising the way the company and its senior management team pivoted from focussing on their competitors and how to beat them to putting the customer’s needs truly in the spotlight and working to service them. This change required the support of an efficient supply chain. The whole process is placed under the microscope from origin to the modern day, from improvement processes to the things that did not go according to plan. It is quite a candid, open read.

It might be fair to describe this book as a mega case study about Lean concepts, with strategy, business development, marketing and operations all bolted on for good measure and a living, breathing subject used to highlight the theory and show how it can be used in practice. For a company of Tesco’s size, changes can offer a dramatic change to its bottom line, such as switching to a daily delivery from suppliers shaved GBP 400m off its cost base. Savings could be found in many areas, such as how items are stocked on shelves, how logistics are coordinated and how smaller batch-produced items provided at a higher frequency were better and more able to keep up in demand.

Even the smallest of companies can potentially learn a lot from this book, even if the savings are more modest. It is hard to give this book anything other than a ringing endorsement. As you will expect from a Kogan Page book, it is cleanly designed and comes complete with a highly detailed index and a packed bibliography.

So, a specialist read that many generalists would also benefit from reading.

Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Music/Culture), by Michael Veal

When Jamaican recording engineers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, Errol Thompson, and Lee “Scratch” Perry began crafting “dub” music in the early 1970s, they were initiating a musical revolution that continues to have worldwide influence. Dub is a sub-genre of Jamaican reggae that flourished during reggae’s “golden age” of the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Dub involves remixing existing recordings—electronically improvising sound effects and altering vocal tracks—to create its unique sound. Just as hip-hop turned phonograph turntables into musical instruments, dub turned the mixing and sound processing technologies of the recording studio into instruments of composition and real-time improvisation. In addition to chronicling dub’s development and offering the first thorough analysis of the music itself, author Michael Veal examines dub’s social significance in Jamaican culture. He further explores the “dub revolution” that has crossed musical and cultural boundaries for over thirty years, influencing a wide variety of musical genres around the globe.

From Booklist
Veal chronicles how dub music progressed from remixing and altering existing reggae recordings to studio-creating original songs out of music samples, noise, and found sounds. Inventing and developing techniques with effects similar to what turntable scratching and sampling later achieved, Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and others paved the way for rap by placing the boasting of "toasters" over bass-heavy charts and fractured soundscapes. Veal traces the development of the drum-and-bass sound central to reggae and dub, noting that "sonically and aesthetically, musicians like DJ Kool Herc," often called the progenitor of rap, "essentially transplanted the Jamaican sound system model" to the Bronx, where it was finally distilled into rap. Drawing on interviews with dub pioneers DJ and producer-recording artist Mikey Dread, Veal posits that dub and hip-hop are "deconstructive compositional strategies" that sensitize "listeners to the microaesthetics of production." Yow! Persuasive if weighty stuff that draws a line of musical development from the studios of Kingston to the bling-encrusted world of hip-hop--and it has a killer discography. Mike Tribby

Review
"Veal has written the first comprehensive overview of (dub's) development up to and including the digital music that followed dub's analog innovations... Veal does an excellent job of explaining, analyzing, and describing sounds. He also connects dub's influence to hip-hop, dance, electronica, and other modern genres, demonstrating how many dub tricks are still being used today in various incarnations. Readers will especially appreciate Veal's excellent Appendix of Recommended Listening, which includes catalog numbers that will make these recordings easier to find... (T)his is certainly the best and only book on dub music; highly recommended for all academic and public music collections where reggae music is popular." —Library Journal

“Veal deftly outlines the sociopolitical context in which dub arose, and explains how the cut-corner, make-do economics of the Jamaican record business led to a maximization of materials: song begat deejay version(s) beget dub(s)-at least three products for little more than the price of one... Where Veal's book steals a march on the competition is in his technical analysis of how Tubby, Perry, Thompson, Sylvan Morris, and other mixing engineers adapted (and creatively abused) the equipment in studios... He also analyzes a number of tracks by each of the principal dub engineers under discussion...to show the transformation of song to version and dub, all of which is illuminating...(H)e provides valuable information as to where these tracks may be found... (T)his is an extremely bold and interesting book.”—The Wire

Review
“This extraordinary book, with its rich interpretation of the aesthetics and social significance of dub, constitutes a dramatically original contribution to the study of Jamaican popular music, and should be a landmark in popular music studies as a whole.” (Peter Manuel, professor of ethnomusicology, John Jay College and CUNY Graduate Center)

“Veal’s wise volume has rescued Reggae music at last from the tentacles of exoticism. This is a glorious affirmation of dub’s rebel, Creole spirit.” (Paul Gilroy, Anthony Giddens professor of social theory, London School of Economics)

Droppin' Science
By Francois Kevorkian
While there may be some readers grumbling about the author's 'dryness' in this volume, I found it to be a unique and invaluable resource in bringing out many heretofore unknown details of dub production techniques from some of its most revered protagonists.

This book authoritatively helps frame Dub in the greater context of Jamaica's musical and cultural landscape in the second half of the twentieth century, with unique innovations which some would argue has had an immense but vastly under-appreciated impact on the rest of the planet's musical development up to this very moment. The author has managed to provide studio rats such as myself with the luxurious wealth of information that -short of being having been there- some of us had been looking for since first hearing some of these recordings more than a quarter of a century ago, and as such is an invaluable addition to any dub creator's tolbox.

The minute and precise details in which some of this is recounted is a unique asset in helping preserve what has up to now been nothing but soon-to-be-gone and more often than not distorted oral tradition, and its many direct quotes from those key players still alive today will make it a solid historical reference point for those planning to further study this subject for years to come!

It is also welcome and refreshing to read such an account from the writer's African-American perspective, as it brings up many crucial facets of Jamaican music and culture into a sorely needed focus, which up to now has been the province of either ethnomusicologists who for the most part somewhat missed the point, or enthusiasts without the necessary research background and clarity of expression to bring it all together.

There are very few books that arguably helped change one's life. In my case, this is most definitely one of them. It comes with my highest recommendation.

Imaginative Work on a Revolutionary Musical Form
By Anonymous
A book like this is long overdue. The simple fact that it was published makes it good. Of the two most important strains of contemporary black music, hip-hop has generated thousands of books and articles, but dub has been largely ignored by the ethno-musicological world.

Dub - Soundscapes And Shattered Songs In Jamaican Reggae by Yale ethnomusicologist Michael E. Veal, is a scholarly work, but don't let that scare you. I know some of you might dislike the book because of its somewhat academic tone, scoff at many of its themes and find them pretentious, but I strongly disagree. This is a terrific analysis. Prof. Veal examines dub in a variety of contexts not only as an expression of Afro-Caribbean culture and the Jamaican music business but as an art form and creative process comparable to just about every modern, futurist and post-modern movement from dada and surrealism to conceptual art, from Luigi Russolo and John Cage to its influence on hip-hop and worldwide dance-pop culture.

It's not all dry, academic stuff. The man knows, and more importantly, loves his dub music. First, Prof. Veal shows us his dub credentials by going into detail about Jamaican music. But instead of the more familiar reggae legends about impoverished young ghetto singers and gun-toting producers, Veal's emphasis here is on recording studios, audio equipment, and the engineers themselves. After all, dub mixed at the various studios sounded the way it did because of the improvised, often homemade technology the early reggae engineers used. Syd Bucknor, Sylvan Morris, Graeme Goodall and Byron Smith are all mentioned, moving on to Tubby, Errol ET Thompson at Randy's, Channel One etc. There's a lot of interesting information about how JA studios developed during the late 60s and 70s.

Veal also compares dub with rock psychedelia and the use of ganja, but also notes that many of the most famous dub originators didn't smoke (Tubby and ET, for example) and while some reggae figures insist dub is not "ganja" music, others insist it most certainly is. Dub can be seen as similar to psychedelia's liberation from sonic slavery, but it seems unlikely that Jamaican engineers were listening to Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. On the other hand, a certain amount of psychedelia's production techniques like echo/delay and phase shifting made their way into some American R&B and Soul records of the late 60's and early 70's, which have some rather proto-dubby-sounding parts. These records would've been familiar to Jamaican musicians at the same time dub began to appear, and are likely to have influenced them.

Prof. Veal conducted dozens of recent interviews with various figures connected with dub's 70's heyday. "Fortunate survivors" would perhaps be a more accurate way of describing them, given the all too common murders and early deaths which are a tragic fact of life in JA. The dark, moody and aggressive nature of much dub is also considered as a reflection of the crime and violence in Kingston's ghettoes. These interviews contain a wealth of comments which help shed new light on the development of dub. Sadly, the fact that a book on dub has taken 30 years to appear means that King Tubby and several others aren't around to offer their comments

Then, he takes us through a few carefully analyzed mixes by various engineers. It's good to see others besides Tubby and Scratch getting their due credit. Here, Prof. Veal shows us he really listens to this stuff like a truly obsessed fan. Starting with some late 60's Studio One productions, he describes the recordings in great detail, noting the peculiarities of the mixes, instrument placement, sound quality and tape hiss. He describes how the mixes were done based on his interviews with the engineers, what key the tunes were played in, how echoed/delayed chords and vocals create strange rhythmic and harmonic juxtapositions, even noting the echo/delay rates used, the qualities of various types of reverb equipment, and how the signal path through the mixing board created certain sounds. There's a lot of interesting comments by the engineers; Jammy says his best mix ever was "Jammy's A Shine", his powerful, mind-blowing dub of Ronnie Davis' cover of the Wailer's "Sun Is Shining" produced by Bunny Lee around 1977-78. "That record mash up Jamaica and England and Europe and them places completely!" says Jammy.

Professor Veal explores the concept of dub as a process rather than product, which transforms the "truth" and "reality" of a normal reggae tune, its sounds unfolding and being turned inside out in the mix, causing the listener to question the authority of their preconceived notions. This was similar to the goal of dada/surrealism (to take one example) and thus dub can be considered to be part of the 20th century's avant-garde tradition. Many of the themes have been briefly discussed by music critics in the pages of The Wire and the liner notes to the Macro Dub Infection compilations for instance, but Veal devotes 300 plus pages to it, and expands on dozens of the same thoughts and feelings about dub as I (and others) have had for these last 25 years. Slavery and colonialism, the Afro-futurist sonic sci-fi of Sun Ra and Lee Perry, class and race issues, technology and information, all get name checked. The fact that Veal's themes are sprawling yet coherent demonstrates the importance of this music.

I've always felt it is probably one of the most revolutionary developments in late 20th century "pop", and Veal also touches on this line of reasoning. Dub radically subverts traditional structures of harmony, rhythm and composition. Dub disrespectfully ignores the notion that every recording of a musical performance is sacred and must not be technologically tampered with because it destroys the integrity and authenticity of the musicians' "artistic expression" as caught on tape. The implications of this subverts the idea that a piece of music (or any art) is "complete" in only one, final form, as intended by its "creator", and ignores ownership and copyright issues. Thus it can be compared to such figures such as Cage, Stockhausen, Warhol, Duchamp, Derrida, Deleuze and Guatarri, post-structuralism and deconstructionism (etc bla bla bla). Dub wallows in gimmicky, anti-musical sound, using echo, fade-ins and outs and other sound effects in totally inappropriate ways which an "authentic" "serious" musician would find absolutely appalling. It not only re-mixes, but it re-thinks, ignores, or gleefully violates practically every rule in the book. The same things were said about bebop back in the 40's, but ironically it is often the jazz purists who loathe musical developments like dub and hip-hop. Like the use of sampling, dub's entire assault on musical convention infuriates traditional, conservative musicians, and on balance, this is certainly a good thing. That's what makes dub so innovative and important, and of course so much fun.

These days, when there are so many people creating what Adrian Sherwood calls "designer dub" - a reggae composition intended to be "dubby" from the start, Veal reminds us that "dub" cannot really exist without a "vocal" version to compare it with - dub is a process of transformation. That's what makes dub so powerful. It's far more dramatic when you hear the vocal followed by the dub (or perhaps vice-versa). A "dub" tune by itself may sound good on its own terms, but it will be far more thrilling when heard in contrast to its traditionally-mixed vocal cut. Obviously, the 12" and "showcase" LP are the ideal formats for this.

I'm really impressed with this book, and it's about time someone from the academic world gave dub some serious consideration as a major, influential musical art form.

Great resource for musicians, producers and students of popular culture
By F. M. Coleman
This is a book written by an academic, but it has applications for anyone interested in this kind of music. After covering the development of modern Jamaican music from independence in 1962 on, he devotes a lot of space to analysis of the different recording strategies used by most of the well-known originators of dub and breaks down individual tracks in some detail, even detailing the specific equipment used by many producers. As someone who records and mixes my own music I found this kind of information really useful and inspiring and it has already caused me to question some of my own creative strategies and techniques. The second half of the book looks at the music in its political and historical context and follows the influences of dub in modern music. A book like this has long been called for. I remember the frustration of talking to young DJs who were all about 'dub' but actually didn't even know the music had originated in Jamaica. Dub was an extraordinary moment in modern music and deserves the seriousness of this treatment. One presumes that had this music originated in Europe they would be devoting university courses to it. Some readers may find the second half of the book a bit dense, but I loved all of it.

The code snippets across languages are great.
By D. Bushmiller
This is my second copy of Ms. Wear's book. THIS IS IT. The code snippets across a bunch of languages are great. It is just what I need to review right before teaching. In the perfect world everyone of my students should read this. You should read this. I teach the OWASP top 10 from a non-programmer stance at least 4 times per year. I need a way to explain to programmers threat & control in a nice tight code example. She goes beyond the OWASP top 10 and into a few CWE.

Great Resource for Programming Students!
By Audrey Gendreau
This field manual provides an excellent opportunity for a computer science curriculum to educate their students about the current issues of programming without secure coding. I introduced it to my graduating seniors in order to increase their awareness of secure programming. It has many of the languages that colleges teach, and it will increase their awareness whether examined from an in-depth or high-level perspective.

Miserably poor editing; mind-numbing content
By M. Weber
Wiley should be ashamed to publish this book; every page shocks me with careless grammar errors and convoluted logic. Tonight's bombs included "This are stable features of the system" (page 116) and "Surprisingly, Davis does not mention what we consider to be the most important traceability information namely information which records the dependencies between the requirements themselves" (page 129). The diagrams are extremely simplified, usually a handful of boxes with arrows, some labeled, some not. The print looks as if it had been delivered as "camera-ready" out of an aging departmental laser printer; entire lines are skewed to italic, and the grey backgrounds behind "key points" and other focus boxes are very dark with distracting vertical stripes. Getting useful information out of this book is very challenging, as I have been constantly tripping over run-on sentences, oddly phrased summaries, and incorrect assertions about the state of technology as it applies to the practice. If you can find ANY other book that may suit your needs, get it instead of this one. It's offensive to have to pay so much for a book that doesn't even meet high-school standards for composition. If it weren't required for a class, I'd be trying to get a refund right now. You can bet I'll be selling this paperweight at the first opportunity.

Great introduction to requirements engineering
By Linda Zarate
This book is broken down into requirements processes and techniques, which makes an ideal reference for companies that are implementing requirements engineering, for consultants who are developing and implementing requirements processes and procedures for clients, and for individuals who are seeking to improve their professional skills.
I like the way this book starts with a frequently asked questions (FAQ) about requirements. In my experience requirements and the processes and techniques that are associated with eliciting and analyzing them are not clearly understood. Too often requirements spill into design, and this part of the book will show you what a requirement is and what it is not.
The requirements process models covered in this book are complete, and serve as a complete life cycle of a requirement from elicitation to analysis, validation and management. Some strong points about this approach include the need to test requirements, as well as to manage changes as they are refined. Moreover, the authors' approach to constantly assuring traceability is a mature practice and the key, in my opinion, to effective requirements management.
Part two of this book covers the requirements engineering techniques that are the "moving parts" of the processes. Some are outdated or cumbersome, such as Structured Analysis and Design Technique (SADT), while others are interesting, such as Viewpoint-oriented System Engineering (VOSE). Some highlights of this part of the book include: definition of non-functional requirements (another grossly misunderstood aspect of requirements management), interactive system specification approaches and transitioning to object-oriented design. I also found the case study at the end of the book both useful and interesting.
I think this book is an excellent starting point for understanding requirements engineering. It covers a wide range of methods and does not advocate any particular methodology, which makes it valuable for generalists who do not want to lock themselves into a single way of managing requirements. The processes provided are excellent and complete. I recommend this as a first book on requirements engineering because of its unbiased and straightforward treatment of this discipline.

Poorly Written Book
By Jonathan J. Carr
This book should not be the primary text used for a Systems Engineering course, yet it was. I read several reviews that stated this book had errors. Indeed the author must not have proof read his text. It is poorly written with so many spelling and grammar errors you have to wonder how accurate the information in the text is. Additionally I have noticed that the author has half-facts or contradictory statements. If you are forced to purchase this book for a class, sorry to hear about that. If you have an option to not buy this book, don't.

possibly the most entertaining one yet
By A Customer
If ever I needed a strong reminder not to pay attention to professional critics, the review from Kirkus listed here would be it. _The Snake, The Crocodile, and The Dog_ is actually a leaner book than its bulk would indicate, less self-indulgent (and even more fun!) than some of the earlier books (_The Lion in the Valley_ for example).
If you're at all familiar with the Peabody books, you already know the basic set-up: archaeological mystery, mysterious goons, the Emersons in danger, etc. The delivery is what's so delightful this time. Characters from earlier books are involved and/or referred to in several places, keeping the continuity within the series high, and Peabody herself receives some much-needed humbling in multiple places.
And Ramses is as entertaining as ever, even though he's not physically present for the bulk of the novel. But even separated by hundreds and hundreds of miles, Amelia can't escape him! It's as fun and frustrating as ever to hear Amelia criticize and complain about Ramses when, as is evident to everyone, HE IS EXACTLY LIKE HER! There is a telling line late in the book that makes it plain that other characters recognize Ramses' extraordinariness--in a *good* way--even when Amelia won't admit to it.
This is a terribly fun book. I laughed out loud more times reading it than with any other in the series, possibly than with any other book I've ever read. Buy it, read it, and you should love it!

The Seven-Year Itch hits the Emersons...
By drdebs
In this installment of the Amelia Peabody mysteries, we begin with the Emersons settling into comfortable married life with their young son "Ramses" and their newest charge, Nefret. It is time for the winter's archaeological season, and Amelia is determined to leave the children at home with their Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Walter and rekindle some of their earlier marital excitement in the hot sands of Egypt. All it takes is their first night at Shepheard's (their habitual Cairo hotel), the reappearance of old friends and enemies, and a freak accident to do just that!
While this is not the best book in the series, it is certainly full of the humor, romance, astonishing British sense of superiority, and archaeological suspense that are the hallmarks of the series. I personally think that Ramses is such a hoot that he is one of the best characters in the books, so his being left at home was a slight detriment in my opinion. However, I am sure that the next book in the series will see Ramses and Nefret back in action again!

"Another shirt ruined!"
By Lisa Anne
The most romantic and edge-of-the-seat book of the series, with a doozy of a surprise ending. For fullest appreciation, introduce yourself to the characters by reading prior books. "Snake" will then be all the sweeter and funnier and more poignant and suspenseful for it. This is a book for Amelia Peabody fans to cherish.
