As a Clinical Oncology Resident, I needed a practical guide to review toxicities expected, forms of administration and basic properties of chemotherapeutic drugs. That's exactly what I found in this book.This is not an exhaustive monograph text, and basic aspects(cell cycle, theories of CT, etc) are only summarized. But for the clinician, and for all those who need a quick reference when working at a Day Hospital, this is the right book.

thinking in fractals

Paul Farmer is to me the greatest thinker and do-er in medicine in our times. He has gotten a team of great people to deliver quality care, REALLY quality care, to the poorest people in the world, for diseases that many hard-hearted economic-minded folks thought could never be treated due to scarcity models of thinking. What I love about Dr. Farmer is the way he is filled with expert mercy and real hope. NOT optimism, but hope. And he inspires us all, with the way he SEES how it can be done.
I was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and just a bit ahead of his cycling between Harvard and Haiti. So I know whereof he speaks, and what he has accomplished. I have spent my career practicing medicine in the USA, and I know that all our patients need the same things-- the same help from physicians, and improvements in delivery of care. It gives me abiding joy to see his work, to hear his words. I want to give this book to every young person I know. WE CAN do things better!

Paul Farmer Explains How Medicine Should and Can be Practiced Anywhere

This book contains a series of Dr. Paul Farmer's commencement addresses at many very prestigious medical schools and schools of public health. Consistent with Paul Farmer's many previous publications, his message is that our mission on earth should be to emphasize the "option for the poor." His approach is excellent and relatively inexpensive. He deplores the transformation of healthcare in the United States from being a ministry focused on helping and healing the sick into an industry focused primarily on money. As one who entered medical school over half a century ago, I certainly identify with his message and have seen medical practice in the United States transformed by the medical-industrial complex into what sometimes amounts to no more than organized extortion.

A passionate doctor speaks about global health

Paul Farmer presents his outlook in a series of Commencement speeches, addressing the need to address poverty and inequality around the world. His experience in many countries with Partners in Health gives him authority to speak about global health issues and the inadequate measures to solve these problems. He presents his ideas with humor, eloquence and passion. However since it is a series of speeches, it can be repetitive and I learned more from his previous book, Haiti After the Earthquake, that described the challenges of that country in surviving after the devastation brought by the earthquake. His philosophy comes through with more detail in the Haiti book.

The castle is haunted by the ghost of Ursula Pole, the former governess of the ominous and mysterious master of Cairncross Castle, Lord Newell. Miss Pole, an evil and abusive woman, disappeared one night almost 20 years prior to Alexandra's arrival, and no one knows what became of her. Meagan McKinney introduces several modern elements to this traditional tale of a young woman adrift in a haunted castle, including the heroine's own unusual identity as a young Jew; Alexandra faces estrangement whether she is in an old castle or in 19th-century London. Haunting, evocative, and beautifully written, Gentle from the Night is a tribute to the genre.

Enthralling and Suspenseful—a classic Gothic Romance!

It has all the elements of a great gothic romance: a castle on the moors near York, a “brooding, melancholy and emotionally distant” British lord, and a mysterious ghost that may not be a ghost at all.

Set in 1858, this is the story of Alexandra Benjamin, whose Jewish father left her with little in worldly goods but a love of science and an ability to help the deaf hear. Under the ruse of being her dead father, she travels to York to accept a position with John Damien Newell at Cairncross Castle. Damien has lived in darkness for a very long time, haunted by an evil governess who at one point scared his younger brother, Samuel, speechless. He is not pleased to discover “Alex Benjamin” is actually a woman. But he keeps Alexandra on thinking she may be their last hope to restore Samuel’s speech.

Alexandra spent five years loving a man who didn’t love her and the fact her new employer looks a lot like that golden man from her past makes her wary. She is undeniably attracted to Damien but sees the darkness in his eyes. She has heard the talks of he evil governess who tormented the brothers and perversely desired the older Damien. But she cannot bring herself to believe the woman she has seen appearing at odd times is actually a ghost.

This is a well-written, suspenseful story that draws you in and won’t let you go. Damien is a dark hero albeit he is a blond who wears spectacles. He is torn between wanting to seduce and destroy Alexandra and wanting to claim her as his redemption. To add to her great story, McKinney has used snippets from IVANHOE, the book Alexandra treasures, to bring to mind the lovely Jewish woman Rebecca from that tale.

The mystery persists until nearly the end…

I was interested in this book for the gothic plot, and while it was gothic, it was also a bit on the boring side.
I didn't find Damien all that interesting a hero.
I did like that Alexandra was suffering prejudice for her Jewish heritage, which is a nice and interesting quality for a romance heroine.
Not very sexy or exciting though.

Perfect for people who love dark, Gothic romances

If you miss the Gothics, this book has all the elements that you're missing. But be warned that it has a few elements that most Gothics didn't have. Sex; real spookiness; and a hero who is so jaded that he tries to corrupt the heroine.
Yet for all his dark deeds, Damien has good qualities. He takes care of his developmentally disabled brother, and unlike many so-called "heroes," he never rapes the heroine. In his own twisted way (boy is he twisted), he is honorable.
NOTE: That this book is definitely not for everyone. Some people loathe this book because of its hero. Some so-called dark heroes merely "flirt" with the dark side -- Damien pretty much has a full-fledged affair with the dark side.

This book is awesome. It has detailed charts and explenations of most every scale you would need as well as all the major/minor and power chords. This book has exploded my playing, and I'm now gaining a better understanding of playing bass lines off the cuff in various keys. I would recomend this book for the beginner or the old pro. In 1991, the killing of Artie Mitchell by his older brother Jim stunned San Francisco. After all, the city's famous, or rather infamous, citizens had been innovative pornographers whose classic Behind the Green Door transformed the adult film industry and whose O'Farrell Theatre was the "Carnegie Hall of Public Sex." What led these colorful, unpredictable brothers to their tragically violent end? Journalist McCumber attempts to find the answers, but his book is an awkward mishmash of two separate stories. On the personal level, it is a classic Cain and Abel tale of the responsible older brother tired of taking care of an abusive sibling addicted to sex, drugs, and alcohol. On a broader front, the Mitchells' story symbolizes the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Because McCumber tries to cram in so much material, parts of his book has a rushed, sketchy feel , while other sections (especially the chapter discussing Artie's relationship with women) bore the reader with excessive details. McCumber's occasional Hunter Thompson-type prose is distracting and weakens his book. Still, as the Mitchells knew, sex sells, so there probably will be demand.

I managed until page 125 or so and couldn't read anymore. Sorry. The subject is interesting although somewhat "light" on the cultural revolution at the end of the 60s. What stopped me was the writing : this book is not written, it reads like a transcript from some audio tape. I never read anything so poorly written.

Dreadful writing

David McCumber, now at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, was an editor at the San Francisco Chronicle in the mid-1980s, where the late Hunter S. Thompson made a brief, unsuccessful stint as a columnist. McCumber knew the Mitchells and the O'Farrell Theatre; this book, therefore, perhaps was inevitable. McCumber is also a far better editor than writer, if this book is any indication.

The Mitchells, according to their biographers, saw an opportunity to make big money in porn and did just that. To the biographers, Jim and Artie were "Okie outlaw pornographers" who hired their good ol' boys from childhood as important members of their porn empire. The O'Farrell Theatre was (and remains) a mirrored house of sleaze where bikini-clad strippers hustled greenbacks from customers too shy and ugly to get girls any other way. The Mitchells made millions and spent them just as fast on women, cars, parties, drugs and so on until Artie, crazy from too much for too long, got out of control and everyone said to Jim, "Do something about him, will you?" The whole sordid tale was told much better by Hubner.
