The Battleship Dreadnought (Anatomy of the Ship), by John Roberts

Launched in 1906, HMS Dreadnought revolutionized battleship design. As the first “all-big-gun” battleship, she had superior firepower and speed to anything then afloat, with up-to-the-minute technology. This entry in the Anatomy of the Ship series documents the Dreadnought in beautiful line drawings, with both conventional plans and explanatory views, along with technical details and a record of the ship's service history.

Dreadnought Anatomy first class
By Kim the CD Man
HMS Dreadnought was a revolutionary new type of battleship and set the definition for all following battleships in the 20th century. This book sets the standard as THE reference for the ship and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in battleships in general, right through to the serious builder who wants to scratch-build a museum-standard model.

The book is divided into several key sections - photographs, drawings, technical details. The photos and drawings are excellent and the drawings show not just the broad-picture items but even small fittings such as portholes, loading hatches, and the various types of water-tight doors in use at the time, as well as where the coal chutes were located on the upper decks - all things that many plans fail to show. All drawings are to scale so can be easily enlarged for modeling purposes.

The ship is shown at several stages in her career, not just "as completed", and all major modifications are listed in date order so an experienced modeler should be able to follow the drawings and build the ship at any stage.

Even a non-modeler will enjoy this book. It is not especially cheap but then, quality never is. I wish I'd bought it years ago.

This series is one of the best. Each book covers one ship in great detail
By Robert Abel
This series is one of the best . Each book covers one ship in great detail. This one covers the vessel that started it all HMS Dreadnought. Sadly, if USS South Carolina or her sister had been faster out of the building yards, we might not call 20th century ships of the line Dreadnoughts. This book covers every detail there is about this amazing ship. I recommend this series as one of the best detail books out there.

A must have for any battleship fan
By Bill Hensler
I purchased this book for two reasons. First, I make models of ships. This book is an invaluable reference manual. The detail will actually go into the internal layout of the ship. Crew cabins and sleeping area will show up on the details. The very excellent plans of the ship are worth $30 to $40 dollars at any shop that sells ship plans. That is worth the price of the book.

Conversely, I was a little surprised at the write up of the operation of the ship. Dreadnought had no economical cruise speed. So, unlike other ships of her time period, like the USS Michigan, she was never economical to operate. Dreadnough had no design flaws. Thus, she was the working prototype for all British Great War ships. In design she was perfect.

I was very happy with the pictures of the ship. I had never seen most of the pictures before. The level of detail in these pictures gives a good picture of the set up of the ship.

This book is not a operational history. That is somewhat a regret. However, people wanting an operational history of the ship should read Robert Massey's excellent "Castles of Steel".

This book is total truth in advertising, it is a study of the ship. It is a total look at the Dreadnought. The book is vital for model builders and is a great reference for any student of history.

5 Stars.

Dispensationalism before Darby: Seventeenth-Century and Eighteenth-Century English Apocalypticism, by William C. Watson

For years, critics of premillennialism have argued that John Nelson Darby was the source of the doctrine of the rapture and dispensationalism. Building upon years of research in seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century English theological writings, William Watson argues that dispensationalism and the ideas associated with it were long part of British theological discourse. Drawing upon hundreds of early printed English books and years of archival study in primary sources and British libraries, Watson demonstrates that Darby’s thought was neither aberrant nor original. To the contrary, he was following a long line of British clergy who anticipated the restoration of Jews to a national homeland and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years
By Michael H.
Fantastic, groundbreaking, vastly important work!! Watson sheds a new light on the correct origins of many elements of dispensationalism that pre-date John Nelson Darby. The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years. Nearly every theology textbook will have to be revised due to Dr. Watson's research. I had the pleasure of hearing him lecture on this topic recently and was impressed. I'm still reading the book, but it is groundbreaking!

Serious students of eschatology need to read this
By David Anderson
William Watson provides a wonderful resource full primary evidence that futuristic premillennialism does not originate with Darby. The book offers a panoply of source after source making the same case--that Darbys system was nothing new. Most interesting were the quotes from many English Puritans and a good number of Westminster divines who held firmly to a futuristic plan for the people (and nation) of Israel. Watson's book makes a very strong case as well as a rebuttal to the dismissive theological urban legend that dispensationalism is solely the brainchild of Darby. Serious students of eschatology will benefit from this work.

God's Timing
By Greenstone
Dispensationalism deals with God's timing of events in the world. Author Dr. William C. Watson's work, ergo, refines the order upon which man's perception of God's timeline was advancing in the two centuries before John Nelson Darby.

Darby is the man erroneously credited by others, not himself, with initiating the teaching of the imminent, or any moment, Rapture.

"Dispensationalism Before Darby" provides a crucial compendium of documented 17th and 18th century sources to immolate the proposed error that Darby was responsible for concocting the imminent Rapture doctrine in the early 19th century.

Establishing a veritable literary fusillade of testimony supporting the teaching of the imminent Rapture doctrine during the 17th and 18th centuries, obviously pre-dating John Nelson Darby, this weighty tome offers hours of detailed, pleasurable reading for all concerned.

Truly, Nelson is credited with formulating "classical dispensationalism" by scholars such as Dr. Ed Hindson, Dean & Distinguished Professor of Religion, School of Religion, Liberty University.

However, Hindson declares, "...Watson plows new ground in researching the history of eschatological thought prior to the nineteenth century."

Certainly, some few Bible Scholars familiar with Matthew Henry, publishing his famed commentary a century before Darby, are aware that Henry's commentary records Matthew's own support of the imminent Rapture stance. Strangely, most of those allowing Henry's commentary to gather dust on their overladen library shelves do not.

Thus, importantly, this volume eradicates the claim that Darby inspired the teaching.

Significantly, this line of thought is highlighted when one considers the Rapture, by all of these witnesses from the centuries leading up to Darby, was at that time viewed as 'imminent' !

For initial proclamations of the imminent Rapture in the 1st century Church, you are referred to "Blast Off Rapiemur."

Well done, Dr. Watson !!!

Till the Shout!

Extreme Risk Management: Revolutionary Approaches to Evaluating and Measuring Risk, by Christina Ray

A revolutionary new approach for detecting and managing inherent risk

The unprecedented turmoil in the financial markets turned the field of quantitative finance on its head and generated severe criticism of the statistical models used to manage risk and predict “black swan” events. Something very important had been lost when statistical representations replaced expert knowledge and statistics substituted for causation.

Extreme Risk Management brings causation into the equation. The use of causal models in risk management, securities valuation, and portfolio management provides a real and much-needed alternative to the stochastic models used so far. Providing an alternative tool for risk modeling and scenario-building in stress-testing, this game-changing book uses causal models that help you:

  • Evaluate risk with extraordinary accuracy
  • Predict devastating worst-case scenarios
  • Enhance transparency
  • Facilitate better decision making

good one for general audience
By LOV
This is an exceptionally clear book written by an industrial expert for the general public. The book covers a lot of topics with focus on causality and extreme risk. On the other hand, it does not teach how to measure risk, how to do causal inference, etc. It only serves to introduce those concepts. The author also seemed to differentiate between statistics and causality but, in fact, a lot of the theories in causal inference are invented by statisticians, econometricians or epidemiologists (all stat-oriented professionals) - the most well-known framework may be the Rubin Causal Model (RCM)'s counter-factual or potential-outcome approach which seemed to have been missed by the author. The author appeared to favor the Pearl Causal Model (PCM) which is a more in-depth approach to causal inference through causal diagrams and the "do-calculus", and as argued by Pearl and many AI experts, epidemiologists and philosophers, is one of the best approaches. The RCM's potential-outcome approach can also be regarded as a subset of the PCM. However, the author did not describe any of the above methods. For that reason, I cannot recommend a 5-star rating. Overall, it is a wonderful book to read if you just want to learn the concepts not the techniques.

The Connectivist Approach
By JF
A paradigm-shattering examination of how we connect the financial and intel communities: "This alternative world is one in which plausibility rather than probability is modeled. The consequences and likelihood of events that have never before occurred but that can be reasonably anticipated (as a consequence of other events) are included in the quantitative models. Such modeling is the forte of the intelligence community and those responsible for national security, who must create metrics and construct solutions for threats that have never before occurred."

There's a good overview here as well: [...]

Written by a real expert
By Drew Miller
I've worked with Christina Ray and am familiar with some of her path-breaking work. She is a true expert in financial risk management, at the cutting edge of developing new techniques; not some academic researcher publishing a book for resume development. If your hedge fund/money manager hasn't read and mastered this book, you probably should move your investments elsewhere.

Great book, Great extortion from the publication companies
By Jacob Bogner
I'm always hesitant to rent because I don't trust myself or shipping services to get it back properly and on time. That being said, Bruce Ballenger is a genius. The book is incredibly helpful in creating not just a research paper but a crafted masterpiece of writing. The reason this gets two stars is because of price! This is a relatively short book and it costs 60 bucks new! for $40 more I could buy all 7 Harry Potter books new! That's several THOUSAND more pages (3407 to be approximate) and MUCH more entertainment! This book costs 60% of the series and contains 384 pages! That's 60% as expensive for not even 10% of the page count!!!!!

By M. Butron
Needed for college English class but upon looking through it, it's obvious this book is more for high school kids. I will most likely leave it to collect dust on my desk and open it about 2 times during the semester. Also ordered new but it arrived very banged up anyway, keep that in mind if you order.

Very Helpful.
By Amazon Customer
Such a helpful book for a college student, and anyone else for that matter, attempting to write a research paper. Lots of tips, tricks, and advice from an intelligent professor. The best part for me was all of the APA/MLA requirements in the back.

So good I'm tempted to keep it a secret and not tell anyone about it: a compendium of working Jedi mind tricks
By Dr Ali Binazir
WHY THIS BOOK MATTERS: We negotiate or persuade dozens of times a day. Then there’s the big stuff that changes the course of life: getting a raise; landing a job offer; buying a car or house. Most of us had no formal training in negotiation, or were taught incorrectly. This book is your secret weapon for mad success.
MAIN CONCEPT: Tactical empathy: “This is listening as a martial art, balancing the subtle behaviors of emotional intelligence and the assertive skills of influence, to gain access to the mind of another person.”
IS IT FUN TO READ: Finished it in a day. The book’s full of riveting life-and-death hostage negotiations, and Voss spins a damn good yarn.
OKAY, BUT IS IT USEFUL?: I highlighted 109 passages and took 20pp of single-spaced notes. There is so much crazy useful stuff in this book that it would be a bargain at 100x the price. For example, Voss advocates getting to “No” before getting to “Yes.” To those schooled in academic negotiation, this may seem heretical. But it makes all kinds of sense: letting your adversary say a solid “no” gives them a feeling of safety, security and control -- a great starting point to a negotiation. The technique of asking calibrated open-ended questions is pure gold (e.g. “How do I do that?” or “What’s important to you about that?”) Funny thing is that I’ve been teaching that technique for years, but only now understand *why* it works so well (thanks, Chris!).
Then there’s the step-by-step protocol for negotiating your salary and the 6-step Ackerman bargaining model. There’s mirroring: you repeat people’s words verbatim, so they feel understood. There’s labeling, where you identify the emotion behind what people are saying, thereby deepening empathy. Great quote: “Good negotiators, going in, know they have to be ready for possible surprises; great negotiators aim to use their skills to reveal the surprises they are certain exist.”
What I really like about this book was that its techniques were honed by real-life negotiations with actual bad guys. During his 24 years as FBI Lead Hostage Negotiator, time and time again Voss got people released from the grips of determined terrorists and kidnappers. If the techniques work in those critical situations, surely they’re good enough to help you negotiate a raise.
In the end, this is a book about not just being good at negotiation, but being great at life. “Never Split the Difference” is serious wisdom, every bit of it earned, conveyed with great humor, storytelling and insight. Read it to be a more effective human.

“WE’VE GOT YOUR SON. GIVE US ONE MILLION DOLLARS OR HE DIES!"
By Bassocantor
And so begins this surprising book. The author begins the book by relating his experience at a prestigious seminar at Harvard University. Several of the college's top negotiators put him on the spot to see how he would negotiate in a hypothetical hostage negotiation.

The author held his own against the expert negotiators, surprising the professors. How did he do so well? Mr. Voss explains that the methods used by the FBI were developed over time, "products of experiential learning; they were developed by agents in the field, negotiating through crisis and sharing stories of what succeeded and what failed." In other words, these tactics HAD to work. If hostage negotiators failed, people literally DIED.

The author discovered that the same techniques used in life and death situations could be generalized--they "made great sense intellectually, and they worked everywhere...In the twenty years I spent at the Bureau we’d designed a system that had successfully resolved almost every kidnapping we applied it to."

NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE is not just about tricky negotiation tactics, or ways to "outwit" your adversary in battle. Whether you are negotiating with kidnappers, or just negotiating a raise, the principles are the same. For example, people always want to be understood and accepted. "Remember you’re dealing with a person who wants to be appreciated and understood." This is true no matter the type of negotiation.

This also means careful listening, or what the author calls, the martial art of "Tactical Empathy." It's nearly impossible to listen to the other side; so, you have to deliberately change your focus: "Make your sole and all-encompassing focus the other person and what they have to say. In that mode of true active listening."

Each chapter in NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE begins with a real-life example from the author's involvement with hostage negotiations. Warning: Many of these cases are brutal, and oftentimes people are hurt, or even killed. After the real case is presented, the author then explains what negotiating techniques worked, and which didn't. At the end of each chapter, there is a nice wrap-up of the key lessons learned.

One of the key techniques recommended is to "Be a mirror." You simply try to reflect back what is said: "The intention behind most mirrors should be 'Please, help me understand.' Every time you mirror someone, they will reword what they’ve said. "

The book's title reflects the author's position that compromise, or "Splitting the Difference" is actually a lazy way to conclude a negotiation. It often gives bad results: "We don’t compromise because it’s right; we compromise because it is easy and because it saves face." However, a simple compromise is often "ineffective and often disastrous. At best, it satisfies neither side. And if you employ it with a counterpart who has a win-lose approach, you’re setting yourself up to be swindled."

Instead of taking the easy way, Chris recommends working relentlessly to see "what is really motivating the other side." The negotiation is not so much a battle, as a process of "Discovery." Figure out as much as you can about what the other sides really needs. Even when the other side says, "No," that's okay. Use that to clarify what the parties really want. Figure out the other side’s “religion," or what truly matters to them.

Finally, the Appendix contains detailed steps for preparing for an important negotiation. For instance, list your goals, as well as the negotiating "tools" you will be using. Chris explains that in the heat of discussion, you will otherwise forget your tactics.

All in all, I found NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE to be an impressive book, filled with practical knowledge, tips, and just plain WISDOM about how to deal with people. I like the fact that the tips and tactics are PROVEN techniques--not just some theoretical ideas.

If you've negotiated with kidnappers, I'm pretty sure that qualifies you as an experienced negotiator.

This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation
By stedlaw
My bona fides: I have professionally negotiated for over thirty years. Do it daily. I've taken approximately 20 hours of graduate study in negotiation and conflict resolution. I occasionally lecture on the subject.

My rating: This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation. The other is Cialdini's famous, "Influence: The Art and Science of Persuasion." While there are many good books on the subject, I can't think of any others that are as complete and useful as these.

Advice: Remember that negotiation is a practice. You will be best aided by these books by taking a chapter at a time and practice the ideas and techniques. Practice them on your family, on your colleagues and on your friends. (Forget pets. Dogs are too obliging and cats too indifferent.)

nearly 50% of this book is like a semi-dialogue between the author and someone else
By James FranKOOK
its okay. nearly 50% of this book is like a semi-dialogue between the author and someone else. Makes it vague, and unpleasant to read. Fills the pages with nonsense half the time. I feel like its due to the inadequacy of the author Sankar- whos name is as bold and big as the title. In my opinion this is one of the worst lectures/books I have read on Vivekananda and his gurubhai (brother-disciples). There are other books with more authority or even the source of this text. Was not worth the purchase price. And SANKAR the author does not know how to convey anything meaningful. Maybe you will glean at most a handful from this; he could have taken the time to make a definite volume. The text is almost a conversation between some other researcher and him.

Highly recommended
By B Meyer
Highly recommended. Am using it for self study, and I feel like i have accomplished something even though I'm only 6 chapters in. The pace is good - it assumes learners are motivated, and very quickly progresses to language and grammar you can use every day. Each chapter has quite a number of new characters to learn. These aren't necessarily the easiest characters to memorize and write - but they were useful. Better than sticking to 'easy' characters, which don't get used often. I would recommend buying the workbook together. I found it very helpful in practising the characters, and learning to recognise them faster. I have tried other self-study books, but this is one of the best so far.

Good but...
By TriCan
I am so happy to have gotten the book on time but while in class using the book my teacher pointed out that the book was defective... meaning there are some chapters that are missing information and i need it to follow the class. I do not want to return the book as it may take a while to get a new one and i need it for class. Other than that issue i do like the book but i am not sure i can purchase the other books because if they are also defective i will have more isssues. Please check the books before sending them out.

A Culture of Growth: The Origins of the Modern Economy (Graz Schumpeter Lectures), by Joel Mokyr

During the late eighteenth century, innovations in Europe triggered the Industrial Revolution and the sustained economic progress that spread across the globe. While much has been made of the details of the Industrial Revolution, what remains a mystery is why it took place at all. Why did this revolution begin in the West and not elsewhere, and why did it continue, leading to today's unprecedented prosperity? In this groundbreaking book, celebrated economic historian Joel Mokyr argues that a culture of growth specific to early modern Europe and the European Enlightenment laid the foundations for the scientific advances and pioneering inventions that would instigate explosive technological and economic development. Bringing together economics, the history of science and technology, and models of cultural evolution, Mokyr demonstrates that culture--the beliefs, values, and preferences in society that are capable of changing behavior--was a deciding factor in societal transformations.

Mokyr looks at the period 1500-1700 to show that a politically fragmented Europe fostered a competitive "market for ideas" and a willingness to investigate the secrets of nature. At the same time, a transnational community of brilliant thinkers known as the "Republic of Letters" freely circulated and distributed ideas and writings. This political fragmentation and the supportive intellectual environment explain how the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe but not China, despite similar levels of technology and intellectual activity. In Europe, heterodox and creative thinkers could find sanctuary in other countries and spread their thinking across borders. In contrast, China's version of the Enlightenment remained controlled by the ruling elite.

Combining ideas from economics and cultural evolution, A Culture of Growth provides startling reasons for why the foundations of our modern economy were laid in the mere two centuries between Columbus and Newton.

Review
"[A] fine book. . . . One of our country's great economic historians has helped us better understand the greatest transformation in human welfare our planet has ever seen."--Richard Vedder, Wall Street Journal

"Wide-ranging and erudite. . . . Mokyr offers a useful corrective to excessively deterministic and materialistic treatments of economic history, emphasizing ideas--the West, he argues, had a uniquely positive view about subjugating nature to human control--and individual agency in shaping broad socioeconomic shifts."--Publishers Weekly

"Ultimately, without the impetus of science, economic growth would have fizzled out after 1815. A Culture of Growth is certainly making me rethink."--Brad DeLong, Nature

"A Culture of Growth is a brilliant book. You should buy it and even read it. It's long, but consistently interesting, even witty."--Deirdre McCloskey, Prospect

"In pointing to growth-boosting factors that go beyond either the state or the market, Mokyr's book is very welcome."--Victoria Bateman, Times Higher Education

"What stands out from Mokyr's approach is the highly contingent character of the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. They happened because a lot of different things happened to fall into place; small deviations in the course of events could have given us an entirely different world of technological and economic power."--Diane Coyle, Financial Times

"Mokyr . . . dives into the mystery of how the world went from being poor to being so rich in just a few centuries. . . . Drawing on centuries of philosophy and scientific advancements, Mokyr argues that there's a reason the Industrial Revolution occurred in Europe and not, for example, in China, which had in previous centuries shown signs of more scientific advancement: Europe developed a unique culture of competitive scientific and intellectual advancement that was unprecedented and not at all predestined."--Ana Swanson, WashingtonPost.com's Wonkblog

From the Back Cover

"Many great minds have written many great books about why Europe spearheaded technological progress and economic growth in the past three centuries. Joel Mokyr has joined their ranks with admirable verve, erudition, and originality. In his account, a change in the beliefs, values, and preferences of Europeans drove them to accumulate, share, and apply knowledge as it had never been done before. Agree or disagree with Mokyr's thesis, you definitely need to take it seriously."--Daron Acemoglu, coauthor of Why Nations Fail

"Mokyr's new masterpiece is a virtuoso display of how new thinking in economics can bring a deeper understanding of one of the most important events in human history. A Culture of Growth documents the cultural shifts that permitted the interrogation of nature that then flowered into scientific advances. This book offers us an optimistic vision: a great expansion of communication preceded our modern prosperity, and we can expect this to happen again."--Angus Deaton, 2015 Nobel Laureate in Economics

"In A Culture of Growth, Joel Mokyr explores in detail the interactions among groups of educated people that led to the creation of specific innovative ideas important in the Industrial Revolution. Mokyr's historical laboratory is early modern Europe but his methods and findings seem to me equally useful in thinking about the prospects for a variety of contemporary economies the world over."--Robert E. Lucas Jr., 1995 Nobel Laureate in Economics

"In this immensely learned book, Mokyr argues that a specific culture of growth anchored in the Republic of Letters, spread through the enlightened circuits beginning with Britain, and made the Industrial Revolution happen. Written by America's leading economic historian, A Culture of Growth is magisterial and long overdue."--Margaret Jacob, University of California, Los Angeles

"A giant among the masters of economic history, Mokyr has written a brilliant, persuasive, humane, penetrating, and sensationally good book. Mokyr looks at the immensely powerful idea of a progressive Baconian science, which stepped down from theory to enrich the modern world. The range of scholarship is astonishing and this major work will become a standard in the literature on economic growth."--Deirdre McCloskey, author of Bourgeois Equality

''The most direct link from culture and beliefs to technology runs through religion.'' (456)
By Clay Garner
This work presents Mokyer's conclusion that the scientific revolution/Enlightenment led to the industrial revolution. These two are the basis for the ''great divergence'' - the huge production of economic growth after 1800. Mokyr analyses the research of hundreds of other scholars - and even contrary opinions. Thereafter explains the reasons for his conclusions.

Writes in the academic style. Clear, but occasionally pedantic. Persuasive. Definite opinions without arrogance.

''As this book makes clear, the solutions to the historical and the economic riddles coincide. My focus is on the period from 1500 to 1700, during which the cultural foundations of modern growth were laid. These foundations grew out of a set of political and institutional developments and cultural changes that were not intended to produce these results, and their deeply contingent nature is a recurrent theme in these pages.'' (236) Key theme is presented here. The 'cultural changes were not intended to produce these results'. Think Hayek.

''The most direct link from culture and beliefs to technology runs through religion. If metaphysical beliefs are such that manipulating and controlling nature invoke a sense of fear or guilt, technological creativity will inevitably be limited in scope and extent. The legends of the ill-fated innovators Prometheus and Daedalus illustrate the deeply ambiguous relationship between the ancient Greeks’ religious beliefs and their attitudes toward technology.'' (456)

''If the culture is heavily infused with respect and worship of ancient wisdom so that any intellectual innovation is considered deviant and blasphemous, technological creativity will be similarly constrained. Irreverence is a key to progress. But so, as Lynn White (1978) has pointed out, is anthropocentrism. In his classic work, White stressed the importance of a belief in a creator who has designed a universe for the use of humans, who in exploiting nature would illustrate His wisdom and power.'' (456) Moykr spends many pages on this idea in the chapter on China. Comments on Weber's thesis on the importance of Protestantism and economics. Analyzes the role of Puritans in England.

Spends many pages explaining the importance of the ''Republic of Letters''. Fascinating!

Many other insights. Serves more as a reference book than essay.

More than six hundred references. Extensive index. No photographs.

(The Bible, Protestantism, and the Rise of Natural Science Paperback – by Peter Harrison; covers same epoch with a different focus. Harrison examines the religious foundation for the scientific revolution. Compliments Moykr's book.)

How the culture of growth evolved
By Winton Bates
There can be little doubt that a change in attitude toward nature and the ability to harness it to human needs, that occurred among an educated elite in Europe in the period 1500 to 1700, paved the way for the industrial enlightenment in Britain, and the subsequent economic growth that has now benefited much of the world’s population. Joel Mokyr’s recent book, A Culture of Growth: The origins of the modern economy, explains that change of attitude in terms of cultural evolution.
Since cultural evolution involves individuals in making choices that change their beliefs, values and preferences it might be expected to be a gradual process. However, Mokyr uses cultural evolution to explain the large, discontinuous change in attitudes that occurred in Europe by pointing to: factors causing resistance to such change throughout the world; factors specific to Europe leading to a weakening of such resistance; and specific change agents espousing the cultural change that occurred. At the risk of over-simplifying the author’s scholarly efforts I will attempt to outline his thesis below.
Early modern Europe was a deeply religious age. The great Thomist synthesis, in which Christianity was merged with Aristotelian physics and metaphysics became a deeply entrenched dogma. The prevailing culture discouraged potential innovators from openly challenging this dogma. Science had previously flourished during some periods other parts of the world. It flourished in the first centuries of Islam, but was subsequently held back by mystical religious dogmas. It flourished in China during the Tang and Song dynasties (618-907 and 960-1127), but stagnated during the Ming and Quing dynasties (1368-1644 and 1644-1911) when institutions such as the imperial service examination system served to discourage intellectual innovation.
Political fragmentation is the specific factor which led to a weakening of resistance to intellectual innovation. In the context of the ongoing cultural unity of Europe, political fragmentation made it possible for intellectuals whose ideas were suppressed in one jurisdiction to continue their work elsewhere. The ubiquity of the printing press made a mockery of prohibitions on books by rulers of particular states. The rulers of different states sought to enhance their prestige by competing with one another to attract citizens with academic or other skills.
The third element of the evolutionary story is the work of cultural entrepreneurs, particularly Francis Bacon (1561-1629) and Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Joel Mokyr emphasises that Bacon’s contribution should be assessed in terms of his rhetorical contribution to cultural change rather than his specific contributions to science. Bacon challenged the traditional orthodoxy by emphasizing the potential for the “sacred duty” to improve the material conditions of life to be aided by knowledge gained from experimentation. He argued that knowledge ought to bear fruit in production.
Isaac Newton promoted the view that the universe is mechanistic and understandable and that the role of science is to establish empirical regularities. He also argued that this knowledge should be used for the material benefit of mankind.
The educated elite in Europe – members of the so-called Republic of Letters – looked upon Bacon and Newton as the most influential thinkers of their age. The Republic of Letters set up norms and incentives that supported the market place of ideas. Participants were expected to reply to letters, disclose findings and data truthfully and acknowledge intellectual debts. The main payoff for successful scientific efforts was enhanced reputation. Evidence and logic were needed to back up assertions in order to win acceptance for new ideas. Scepticism provided the basis for advances in codified knowledge.
In Britain, the Puritans were particularly impressed by Francis Bacon’s writings. They were deeply attracted to experimental research. The systematic study of God’s creation was seen to be the closest a Calvinist could get to understanding an inscrutable deity. The study of nature was seen to have potential to instruct interpreters of the scriptures. The Puritans saw a great deal of virtue in “good works”, which they associated with labour that was useful and profitable in a worldly sense. What we call leisure, the Puritans viewed as idleness. They regarded education in physics, science, mathematics and languages as deeply virtuous.
The Puritans showed little concern for improving institutions in ways that would benefit economic growth, but in their stress on empirics and the practical use of knowledge they constitute “an essential link between the early followers of Francis Bacon and the Industrial Enlightenment of the 18th century” (which Joel Mokyr wrote about in The Enlightened Economy). During the later Enlightenment period, science was, of course, able to “shed religion and advance on its own steam”.
In this brief review I have focused on the bare bones of Joel Mokyr’s model of cultural evolution. Readers interested in a broader perspective, should read Deidre McCloskey’s review in Prospect magazine. McCloskey’s important trilogy of books in this field also emphasize the importance of rhetorical contributions in promoting a culture of growth, but implies that literature’s role in changing attitudes toward business made a greater contributions Bacon’s cultural entrepreneurship in the field of science. I mention this just to acknowledge that history is complicated.
I find it difficult to read a book like A Culture of Growth without wondering what the implications it might have for the future. My reading of the history of the industrial enlightenment (sometimes still referred to as the industrial revolution) has previously made me think about the links between cultural change and economic policy reform. One might think that if a cultural evolutionary framework can help us to think about the past it should also be able to help us to think about the future. However, such models can only provide a framework. As Joel Mokyr emphasises models of cultural evolution are contingent rather than deterministic:
“In other words, they force us to recognize that things could have turned out differently than they did with fairly minor changes in initial conditions or accidents along the way” (p 232).
We can only hope that the “accidents” the world is currently experiencing do not destroy the culture of growth.
